Type of Grind ?

Not sure where to post this. I have been using a Dovo Prima Klang for the last few months. Also switch off to a Dubl Duck which i scored on E bay. Both of these razors thin out very quickly when viewed from the end. They also have a bit of a ping to the blade when plucked. Is this what they call hollow ground?

Interestingly received a Wostenholm and Sons Pipe Razor yesterday. $20 at antique mall. This blade looks so different. When viewed on end it looks more like an axe. in other words stays thick till the bevel than thins out. Very heavy and absolutely no ping !

When i shave with the Dovo or Dubl Duck i get a nice scraping sound and know beard is being removed.

Juust shaved with the Wostenholm after a few minutes on the Chinese 12K and strop.

No scraping but one of the cleanest shaves ever. I could not tell beard was being removed till i wiped the blade.

Just curious if this is typical? I'd think the thinner blades would be smoother but I suppose it all comes done to the edge regardless of how much the steel tapers to the final edge.

Is the Wostenholm what they call a wedge grind?

Thanks.

Mods: please move if this belongs elsewhere.

I've never seen a Wostenholm wedge, but I am sure they could be out there. Most of the ones I have seen were half hollow or quarter hollow. Compared to the Prima, which is an extra hollow blade, I am sure the old wosti looks pretty stiff.

There is no hard and fast rule. You can only approximate based on the position within the chart. There is often a fair bit of personal oppinion used when trying to determine the level of grind on a razor, especially when it is not declared by the manufacturer.

I'm thinking that if the tangent point of the radius is 1/4 of the distance from the edge to the spine bevel, that's 1/4 hollow.
