Tying the knot

I'm looking at doing my first reknotting on an ever-ready 150. Being very DIY minded (and cheap) I'm planning on using the bristles from a paintbrush (new of course) and hand tying them. My reasoning behind this:
1. It's for my use only
2. If i fudge the bucket and screw it up it's a paintbrush and i'm out $3 max (as opposed to a knot from the golden nib.
3. I've got the process fairly well planned out (won't go that way but oh well) and finally
4. I've got just about everything else (handle, epoxy, various tying materials, free time) needed for such an undertaking.
Anything i'm missing? Anyone else tried this? Anyone else think i'm crazy?(I sure do )

a paintbrush??? really? that is probably going to be super-harsh on your face....

there really is not mch to screw up with a pre-tied knot. Just make sure you set it at the height you want for stiffness of the knot and epoxy away. Some gentlemen here have used a bit of a wine cork to get the height they want, and then epoxy the whole shebang together.

Well as i see it, most "natural" paintbrushes are china bristle which is a fancy name for boar bristle, and i'm using a VDH boar brush now. other than being brand new and stiff during the break-in period, it should be on-par with that at least

Good luck!
For a bit more money you get a readily tied knot: you can buy a boar knot for some $6 or $7 from The Golden Nib.
But then, I have some very nice Badger Hair paint brushes, maybe that is a way to go, but wait these are very expensive, much more than a badger hair knot would cost. Why would you go through all this when boar, synthetic and badger knots are readily available and they cost not too much?? I could imagine that the China bristles of a paint brush are quite exfoliating.....

The sounds like A LOT of work for what may end being a really lousy brush. I agree with trying a cheap knot from The Golden Nib.

Maybe he just enjoys the challenge.
I say go for it and take pictures during the process, don't let the naysayers discourage you.

remember to post pics or it didn't happen.I hope it turns out well.I've thought about the same thing with a wolverine pelt.

actually one of my cats killed a squirrel today and was playing with the tail. a squirrel is kinda like a small badger... Hmmm...

I had no idea how much natural bristle paintbrushes were! ~$6 for a 2"... BUT i may go the synthetic route, because the brush in question (Ever-ready 150) had a really nice golden tone to the hair before i took the remaining knot out. Most nylon brushes i've priced have a similar color to this. I know I'm going to go with at least a boar, as i like a good bit of backbone, and badger's just too floppy.

Bad idea. Drill (or dremel) out the knot and measure the diameter of the hole with the metric side of the ruler. Remember that 1cm = 10mm. Let us know and we'll give you an idea of which knot to use. The least expensive knot is better than a pain brush. Remember, the paint brush is designed to be abused against a wall with thick paint. I'm sure your face deserves better. And believe me, it's easy to set the knot.

~21mm hole so i'm looking at a 20mm knot set mid-depth. TGN has a cream boar i've been eyeing, but i just joined the penny pinchers...

strange thought... What about local alternatives to badger/boar? i believe the original knot in this brush was horsehair. it was short, but not as scrubby as my boar. Also, the golden color weighs against badger. I know people with livestock... Heck i basically have a cat farm!:w00t:
