What's new

Two Polar Bears Walk into a Den.

A Shave Den that is! I recently posted my new Aqua Velva polar bear decanter and said I would post a side by side of that one and the similar Avon bottle from the same era. Here goes.

Avon's "Arctic King" was produced from 1976-1979. It is made from blue glass and the polar bear is plastic with a metallic finish. It came filled with Everest aftershave.

Aqua Velva's "Iceberg Decanter" was from the same era. I have verified through old newspapers that it was sold in 1977, but I don't know the exact range of production. It is made of clear glass with a plastic bear topper. It came filled with AV Ice Blue aftershave.

The topper on both bottles is a friction fit onto the actual screw cap. You can pull off the topper and then open the decanter, or you can just twist the topper and the cap will unscrew.

Which one do you like better?

Oh man, this may get my membership on the ALPHA Team suspended but I think I like the Aqua Velva set a bit more. But both are flat out awesome!

I can't decide, I like them both. But I won't hold it against you Tom for liking the AV better, it is pretty sweet. AV and Skin Bracer both made a few special shaped decanters, but nowhere near the number that Avon did.

I think the AV is better too. They're both cool, but the AV looks more like a cool bottle rather than just a sculpture. All the weird old AS decanters are fun(ny) to look at, but to me a lot of those things seem like they would be really awkward bottles. The AV strikes a nice balance between cool bottle and sculpture.

whaaaat! both of those are neato! i like the AV better. reminds me of that line in Roadhouse "a polar bear fell on me"

While I've always admired the modern-art quality of the Avon decanter, there's something to be said for the carved detail of the AV topper. I guess I need one of each!

The lifelike bear on the AV bottle is cool, but so it the art deco bear on the Avon. I find it ironic that the Avon bottle has the more realistic iceberg though.
