So I posted some sneak preview pictures awhile back when I first purchased the smaller counter top display case, but since then have cleaned it up ands key up a second. First I'd like to that my pal 72plymsatellite for pointing me into the direction of the second case. Without friends like him and others from here some of the items I've acquired would not have been possible. Now onto the cases!
The first case if I'm not mistaken is what is called out as the Type 3 in Krumholz's book. The dimensions match and the glass is etched like Gillette brochure proclaimed " These showcases are not sold or given to customers but remain the property of The Gillette Safety Razor Company at all times". It may be a little hard to see from the reflection but the glass is etched " Property of Gillette Safety Razor Co" on the top at the back. We know that these weren't introduced until 1907 and 1908 but I've filled them with close to age appropriate items. The small case houses two double rings with instructions and early blades and two shippers although not the correct ones. This case was in decent condition with a purple felt lining and a what looks like a chromed outer skeleton which sandwiches thin panes of glass. I took the case completely apart and cleaned the chromed pieces with some light steel wool and cleaned the glass with a razor blade and windex.
The second case is what's called out in Krumholz's book as the type 2. Its what looks to be solid oak and is fairly heavy. It measures 18 x 12 x 12. It too has the Gillette logo etched on the glass in perfect condition on the front but does no say "Property of Gillette Safety Razor Co.". It has a glass shelve in the middle dividing the case into two equal halves. I've tried to fill this one with items I can make out from the litterateur Gillette handed out but I need a square styled combination set....soon I hope. So for now I've stuck some pocket editions in the bottom and some typical single rings in the top. The combination set is a little special as it has matching serial numbers to the shipper. I have a soft spot for combination sets of any kind.
