Two Coticules for Honing

Recently I've been using two stones (unknown vein) to hone my razors. Two of my 3 coticules have been giving great results but both in different ways (stone #3 is good but is 6x1 and not much use yet). The 8x2 stone slurries fast and I can set a bevel on a wedge and make corrections pretty easy, given the quality of the coticule and the length of it. It works pretty good in the later stages of the unicot method but feel that it doesn't sharpen or finish as well as the 7x2.

When I've used the 7x2 for touch ups and finishing after an 8K norton it gives an incredible edge. Still it works for the initial first step of the unicot method but more often than not I find myself doing the initial bevel a few times.

So I've incorporated both stones; set bevel (after DMT 1.2k) on the 8x2 and then move to the 7x2 to complete. By far has been my best edges on coticules this way.

I was curious to know if anyone else uses a similar method or am I just mad:out:

Personally I would never be setting any bevels on a coticule. There are way better stones for that task. I use my coticule as a finisher only and I don't use slurry.

I actually do set bevels on the blue side with slurry but I don't disagree that there are faster hones for that purpose. I like the simplicity of a small multiple-purpose hone. It's lifestyle thing.

Fortunately my 8x2 has been a diamond in the rough and I've set wedges and evened a few bevels but nothing major. There are more ways than one to get to Rome, I like the scenic route though:tongue_sm

i've had lots of coticules in the past some cut fast some rapid and some moderate with slurrys. with water they do finish slightly differant. some to me leave a crispy but still smooth edge while some can leave a very soft edge . This is what i do . i have a twin hybrid coticule the yellow side cut s rapid i use this for speed the finished edge is smooth but tadge crispy. the hybrid side also cut well slightly slower than my yellow side.the hybrid side leaves a real smooth edge and also soft or more mellow as we relate to at coti.be. My very slim La grosse jaun cuts slower but with water leaves the smoothest edge ever i have come across. i would say extra smooth. I use 1k naniwa to heavy bevel work as i'd hate wear out my hybrid. After 1k i go to fastest side to wipe out all the marks and scratches from 1k. Then i turn hone over and perform dilucot on my hybrid side finish on water, at this point i'm poping hair of that hone. then i finish on my la grosse jaun with 15 to 30 laps . Its took me 4 years to find this combiantion . i've been using this set of hones on all my razors in the last two weeks . The results are unreal. I'm talking ultra smooth edges that shave efortlessly through stubble . Skin that feels like i never ran a razor across it.

It sure is something when you find the right combination on a stone that is so versatile.

it sure is . i just finished honing my duble duck last night the shave was perfect again. the combination was just my burton hybrid side finished on la grosse same result soft smooth sharp edge .i have every paste available on d i can onestly say paste would not produce any better or smoother edge.
