So, Chris at Razorplate just emailed me finished pictures of the brass Karve I had plated. The handle is in black rhodium, while the top cap and base plates are in rhodium. I could not be happier with the outcome and can't wait to try it when it arrives.

Yes, a nickel-plating was required. First was a deep cleaning, then the nickel, then the rhodium(s).

I chose rhodium because it's supposed to be the most durable (that I'm aware of). It should last ... centuries? 
Looks really nice. I am thinking of doing the same with a 3 piece but will have the handle and cap in black rhodium and the baseplate in nickel or rhodium. and then another in the opposite

Why osmium?
Osmium has a unique bluish silver color. It's harder than rhodium. Densest naturally occurring metal. Mainly it's beautiful and I've not seen a razor plated with osmium.

I've not seen it either and the last time I checked Razorplate it wasn't offered, then again not sure why anyone would need anything harder than Rhodium plating to begin with... I think Rhodium would last several lifetimes... Good luck on your search though.
