TTO Doors

I've now amassed a few superspeeds, and have a question. When not in use, is any damage done by leaving the doors closed tight? Should a person loosen it off prior to storing?

Might be a silly question, but one I had time to think about on a slow Sunday shave this morning.

No such thing as a silly question. The superspeed uses a simple screw to secure the doors. There is no spring like the fatboy. So keeping the doors closed would not hurt anything IMO. However, I wouldn't keep the doors very tightly closed, no need to risk stripping the threads of the screw.

As for me, I also tend to keep the doors a bit loose when the razor is not in use with the idea that if there is any moisture down in the handle, keeping the doors a bit loose might allow more of a possiblity of evaporation.

My only concern would be long term storage. If you're not going to use a razor for a while then it wouldn't hurt to leave the razor half a turn loose.

When I have a blade in the razor, I always leave it loose to slightly open, so that air can circulate.

If I am storing one in a drawer for a long time, I generally close the doors, but not tightly. I don't think you can hurt a Superspeed either way. They're pretty tough.

What about a slim? Could it potentially damage the spring?

Yes. In a word, yes. These razors are about 50 years old. Keeping the spring tightly compressed for long periods of time is the way that you soften the spring and thereby ensure that it loses its functionality.

If you've ever seen a car that's been left in storage for a few years, sitting on the tires, you'll have seen how the springs eventually sort of collapse under the weight. That's because the springs are under pressure. Same idea with the razor. Keep the spring tightened down all the time, and the spring will get soft.

+1 Great advice.

+1 on Haiku's common-sense approach!! Certainly storing the razor "loose" will cause no damage over time.

That being said, I have seen adjustable compression springs full of gunk and couldn't be compressed . . . I've seen them bent from being forced closed against gunk . . . and I've seen one with a physically broken spring. I've never seen one with a spring that lost all its ability to take up the slack at the end of the turn . . . but why take a chance???
