True Grit

My wife and I caught an advance screening tonight. I really enjoyed it. The Coens embraced the mythic dimension of the Western and I think that they did a fantastic job of it. Jeff Bridges has redefined Rooster Cogburn. Don't miss it when it comes out.

I remember when the original came out. My folks had us kids piled in the back of the station wagon to see it at the drive in.

Oh ill be there. Looking forward to this movie.

While I loved John Wayne chewing up the scenery in the original, I felt the book was a better story.

I think I'll enjoy both versions.

Just saw the trailer this morning. After the treatment the Coens gave No Country for Old Men, and the Bridges, Damon, Brolin combo, I can hardly wait!

If you're a western fan, you're going to like this. I don't think that the Coens did anything particularly brilliant with the film--it isn't a radical rethinking of the first movie. It's also less a star driven project than the original, but it would be crazy to think that they didn't build it around Jeff Bridge's performance. In many ways, it reminds me more of a stage revival than a film remake. It's true to the first film, to the novel that inspired it, and to the genre of the western (maybe in a way that you wouldn't have to be if you were able to give the lead role to John Wayne). At the same time, it's fresh and creative in a thousand little ways. I loved the performances, but I left the theater terrible nostalgic for afternoons and evenings that I spent watching westerns on TV with my dad. As soon as the movie comes out in general release, I'm putting the kids in the car and heading back.

Although I didn't think anyone could make a good re-make of one of the Duke's best pictures (in which he won his only Academy Award for Best Actor).

But with another Best Actor awardee in Jeff Bridges...might bring some Oscar buzz :w00t:

Q. I wonder who will play his father Chin Lee and if a cat named Genral Sterling Price Gen. Lee will make a 'cameo' appearance

Christopher :badger:

PS Can't wait to see this movie :thumbup1:

It's good to know they got it right. I was worried because I like the original and I am usually annoyed with remakes.

I keep seeing the trailer for this movie and I want to watch it more and more. This movie and Tron: Legacy are the only two that have caught my eye, for movies to see while on vacation this winter.

I am "biting at the bit" to see this film. I love westerns. Love the Coen brother's films. I've always been a Jeff Bridges fan and thought him highly underrated for many years. It's nice to see modern filmmakers adding to the genre. Where would we western fans have been the last 30 years without Clint Eastwood keeping the western alive?

Saw a few trailers...looks like it will be a good movie. From what little I've seen, some of the scenery looks more authentic to where it is supposed to be set than the original movie. I grew up just north of the McAlester area and have been going to Robbers Cave since I was a kid. Now I'm only about an hour-and-a-half away from McAlester, and it only takes about 45 minutes to get to Broken Bow, OK.

Here's some good pictures and a bit of video of the San Bois mountains area in the State Park. Supposedly the remake was filmed in Granger, Texas. I guess the terrain in S.E. Oklahoma would be a little rough to get all of the equipment into and work with...and the Austin area would have more support for a film crew than the more isolated S.E. Oklahoma area.

Just finished reading The Passage, which was 838 pages or so. Was wanting to read a western novel, but after reading the Lonesome Dove series this year, I was afraid I would be let down. Now, after seeing this thread, I realize I need to read True Grit. Can't wait to see the movie. I feel happy as a hog in slop.

the wife and I watched this yesterday afternoon and we both enjoyed it. I was surprised my wife liked it, since she often loathes watching movies. it's funny how watching a Coen Brothers film makes you want to buy a gun.....I now want a lever gun :)

I can't wait!!!

I might actually go to a weeknight show by myself since it's so hard to find babysitters and free time on the weekends. Unfortunately, it's not playing anywhere close at the moment.

I loved it, my wife hated it. I watched the Wayne version a few days later. I think Wayne actually played a more nuanced, in depth character than Bridges (unusual for THE DUKE), but overall the new movie was a more striking rendition. JMO
