Trouble

I think that is what this site is going to lead me to. SWMBO already says I have a problem spending too much money. My AD started with car stereos when I got my first vehicle years ago. Then it moved to cars. FYI - not the best financial move to acquire a car AD. Once I found a car I wanted to keep (my 90 mustang) it went to car parts. I had to have all sorts of things. Then I took up golf. I never knew how much stuff there really was, and how much actually went into the pursuit of the perfect set of clubs. This one is currently ongoing. the one that has lasted since I was about 15 is cologne. In my group of friends, i am known as the one who always smells good. Now, I have discovered this site, and wet shaving. I can tell it is going to be bad.

Previously, I shaved with canned goo, a Gillette fusion, and used Nivea sensitive skin ASB. worked well enough I suppose. One day, I figured I would buy a brush and a puck, so I went to walmart, and bought the VDH set that had a brush, puck, and bowl. Worked ok, but I did not have the technique down. I ended up buying a puck of the classic shaving menthol soap when I picked up my Parker DE razor, and my pewter bowl. On a whim, I picked up a bottle of Pinaud clubman at walgreens. when I was struggling to build a quality lather, I did a google search, and found this site. holy cow, I never realized the diversity of shaving products until I started reading through this site. Since my wife hates the Pinaud clubman (says it smells like her dad), I picked up a bottle of the Pinaud Vanilla when I bought my brush and razor stand. Not getting the quality of lather out of the classic shaving soap, I did some reading, and ended up picking up a tube of the CO Bigelow shave cream. On top of that, to add to my cologne AD, I also discovered a whole new myriad of scents that are not sold in the typical stores (Dillards, Macy's, sephora, etc). Today, I went to a store in Houston called the British Isles (found it recommended here of course). I went with the intention of buying myself some cologne. I was going to pick up something in the TOBS line. While there, i smelled a bottle of Floris JF, and ended up buying that instead. I also took a whiff of the T&H Spanish Leather, and have already planned my next cologne purchase. Since I was there, I picked up a bottle of Floris Cefiro for my wife. Thankfully, she really liked it. As I was browsing through the store, I stumbled upon the case of shaving brushes. Not wanting to leave well enough alone, I picked up a Edwin Jagger badger brush. I can already tell that this site, and the plethora of information contained herein, is going to cost me quite a bit of money in the future. My wife is going to love you guys. :w00t::thumbup1:

At least your in good company here. Some of the many tips you'll pick up don't involve shaving at all.

You'll learn how to dodge SWMBO railings when you bring home new stuff, how to get the Postman to meet you out at the corner, and how to multipurpose items so that SWMBO thinks your new scuttle is a self watering Violet Pot.

Thankfully, I'm working nights right now, so the better half is at work when my packages arrive. Though the run of night shifts will end one day, so I recon I need to stock up while it lasts.

Welcome. Sounds like you've got it bad. May I suggest that a purchase of just a teensy little vintage razor will quell your budding acquisition disorder? I hear you might find one on the BST forum....:001_rolle

To be honest, the thought of buying someone elses used razor does not sit well with me. I understand that they can be cleaned and completely sterilized, but it still just bugs me out a bit. Thanks for the tidbit though.

Oh, you've got to work through that my friend, for sure. There are some amazing pieces of equipment, finely engineered and fabricated, that you just can NOT get in stuff made today.

These razors are after all, made of Brass and Plated in Nickel, Silver or Gold, all of which are alloys that do not absorb stuff.

Barbicide bath the stuff if you have to, but really, is it any different than using the China passed down from Grandma, or the Pocket watch from Grandpa?

Indeed, I bet that pocketwatch would carry a lot more icky things than a well scrubbed and disinfected Safety Razor.

When you go to eat at a friends house, just how clean is the knife and fork your using, or the plate your eating off of? Has it been soaked for 24 hours in a solution that is proven to kill all known pathogens?

Hope you change your mind on this one, 'cause you will really miss out on some fantastic shaving gear.

Without a doubt, I fully and completely know and understand what you are saying. It is just the thought of the fact that that particular razor was used to cut hair (and let's be hones, most likely skin) from another person's face. It is not an irrational fear of catching something, I just dont like the idea of it. Besides, my current razor is perfectly fine for now. I can see using different scented soaps, creams, colognes, AS, and so forth. But, honestly, I dont see the need for multiple razors. If one shaves better than the other, I'll just get rid of the lesser of the two. But honestly, so long as my current razor performs, I'm fine with just using it. I do have AD with certain things, but so far, the razor itself is not one of them. I think since I started shaving, I have probably owned 3 different razors. The only reason I upgraded was for performance, and I threw the older models away.

Well to each his own, and Your Mileage May Vary as they say around here.
I do understand in a way, I feel the same about used soaps from E-bay. I would never buy an old soap from there (I know, it's soap - how dirty can it be?) I just can't get my head around it.
Conversely, I would have no problem with a soap from the BST here at B&B, I think that I probably feel that the guys here would take better care of it, and wouldn't be rubbing it on a goats butt or something.
