What's new

Tried my hand at pipe smoking today

I am not sure of the brand but I picked up a Briar pipe at the tobacco store today for 50 bucks. I think it is called Ferro or something like that. I also picked up a couple ounces of tradewinds 2 tobacco. The first bowl went horribly but the second one was quite nice, after a few relights. I think I am going to enjoy this. If anyone wants to recommend a good tobacco please chime in. I am not sure what to choose as I know you are supposed to be careful how many different kinds of tobacco you smoke thorugh a single pipe.

I smoked a pipe in graduate school. Got really into it with a few of my roommates. Had about4 pipes and a dozen different tobacco on hand at all times.
My experience is that the quality of the smoke has a lot to do with how tightly its packed into the bowl of the pipe. Its the toughest part when you are new to pipe smoking.
If the draw is too quick that means the pipe is packed too lightly, which usually results in a quick burn and a hot bitter smoke.
If I recall correctly, loosely fill the bowl to the top with tobacco and push it down with the tamper half way. Then add more tobacco to loosely fill the bowl and push it down so the bowl is 3/4 filled.
Also by tobacco from stores that sell alot. You don't want the dried out old stuff cause it burn hot too.
Tinder Box is a great place to get fresh tobacco and advice if you have one in your area.

I like meerschaum pipes, here are a few of mine. The top one has a amber stem, the next one was my everyday pipe, and the bottom one I smokeD maybe 10 times.

Still don't have it quite down yet. The pipe is hard to keep lit, and the smoke is a little bitter. I will try bowl number 4 tomorrow and see if it gets any better.

You should check out Tobaccoreviews.com - you will find it much like trying to find the perfect shaving soap/cream in that you will have a collection and then reduce it down to a few. I love Penzance and Stonehaven by Esoterica. I also really like Squadron Leader, Firedance Flake and Full Virginia Flake by Samuel Gawith.

If you like the aromatics then you might want to try Townsman Cavendish Blue by McClelland - it is maple flavoured and really nice and everyone around you will love it.

I quit pipe smoking nearly about 25 years ago, gut the tobaccos that I most enjoyed were by Balkan Sabranie: Virginian (nonaromatic) and expecially 769. MacBarron's was pretty good, too, but clearly not in the same league.
