Traveling

This past weekend I had an over night photo assignment, covering a mountain bike race, decided to just pack a 5 blade Schick and some shave cream. The event started at O early hundred and I didn't want to spend a lot of time in the head, thinking using the cartridge would be quicker. In the morning one look at this stuff made me decide to go without if I couldn't shave properly with my DE and good soap. What a month back on a good razor has done to me.

Once you are used to a "proper" shave with a DE setup nothing else can compare. If you travel a lot you will figure out a "travel" kit to take on the road. It's an opportunity to buy more stuff!

Haha! I've done the exact same thing. If I can't so it right, I don't do it at all. I'd rather not have the succeeding days be painful when I have razor burn and in growns to deal with. One thing I have noticed, too, is that since I have started wet shaving, even just a little bit of stubble seems like too much. At that point, I almost convince myself that I look hagardly and it is time to shave. Back before wet shaving, my mentality was completely the opposite.

It's hard to beat a traditional shave. When travelling, I use a EJ89 in a leather case, razor blades carefully packed between card, a badger brush and a tube of Palmolive cream. It's the only time I face lather these days. It all fits easily in the Dopp bag.

I've found that my travel kit has become significantly smaller with a stick of soap, 4 piece razor and a brush than when i was taking a can of goop, razor and cartridges everywhere with me.

I travel to Seattle all the time, so I've stashed a DE kit in the office where I go. Had to buy blades locally though, since you can't have those in your carry-on. I still have to assemble a kit for actual vacation travel.

When I travel I take my 34C in a fake leather holder, La Toja stick, Wee Scot in a plastic prescription container with a hole poked in the top, plastic soap container for my glycerin soap and alum, and sample size after shaves. This all fits easily in my dopp kit. Of course, if you fly and don't check bags, you need to buy blades at your destination.

I travel over Labor Day weekend and just took my Gillette Guard with CO Bigelow shave foam and enjoyed a nice DFS three pass shave. I did this because of not wanting to check a bag. If I travel by ground then I'd take my injector and some of my gear.

When I travel, I use a slice cut off a shave stick and put my razor of choice in a plastic weishi container. If I am afraid of confiscation, I bring the weishi in the weishi container, and no loss if it is seized!

I wish there were an alternative for DE blades and carry-on... I do everything I can to NEVER check my luggage... But I'm also often in destinations where buying blades when I get there is not an option. I still do everything else the same in my pre- and post-routine, but I do admit to using a disposable "scraper" when travelling?

I would love to hear what some of you have come up with for other options...

Michael
