Traveling with a strr8

Have been shaving with a str8 for the past five days and never want to go back. So how do you deal with traveling? Seems like a lot of stuff to cart around. Do you just give in and throw a disposable in your bag?

The solutions are numerous. Some of the more common ones are to get a Shavette (not my first choice), or you could use a stainless steel razor so that there is less worry about blade rust and such or just take your own carbon steel razor and keep it very dry.

Depending on how long you go, you would have to decide if a straight with a strop is enough (some have gotten over 100 shaves between honings just with stropping!) or if you want to take a barbers hone along or a pasted balsa paddle. I've heard of some folks taking all of their gear, but that would be extreme in my books. :)

EDIT: Just saw there is another thread on this. Hope it's OK to ask again.

I will sometimes bring a shavette (especially if I'm traveling by air and only bringing a carry-on), but the straight stuff really doesn't take up much more space. I have a whipped dog poor mans strop that I roll up and take with me, but you could just as easily use a newspaper. Ive also kind of always wondered if i could use my belt. Otherwise it is the same stuff you need for any other shave.

I was mostly worried about the wet brush. I guess a shave stick gets rid of the mug. I have a piece of leather that rolls up and works ok for a temporary strop.

What kind of brush do you have? A prescription bottle with some holes poked through it can provide protection and ventilation.

I travel and it's no big deal. I go on 18 day trips, so I'll take a 7 day roll, and a strop. For a weekend trip, I'll do one or two in my shaving kit, with my poor man's strop. or just use newspaper. I've got three shave sticks and two travel brushes
that live full time in the shave kit, either on the road or at the office. so... pack enough that's appropriate to the legth of time you're going out for.

flying can complicate it, but it's simple for me. since I'm flying my bird and approving the load going in my bird, I can carry what I want. flying commercially? they'd have to go into checked baggage, or stay home. and I'm probably not going to take the good ones on the road for fear of loosing them possibly.

I don't have a shavette, I have a couple of DEs. since you can't carry on blades for either system, for me, I haven't seen the point of doing a shavette vs. a DE.

I have mailed inexpensive straights to myself at the hotel. I pack return postage in the box. I've also just opted for taking a DE and picking up blades at my destination.

for brushes, I wouldn't use a boar within 24 hrs of traveling, because it's very likely to still be damp. I've got a synth can can be dry in minutes if necessary.

The new Muhle synthetic V2 brushes are fantastic. I use a 21mm when I travel and even at home, it's that good! I love it. Dries super fast.

The synthetics sounded great until I saw the price. I do appreciate the info, just out of the budget for now. So what happens if the brush is still damp? I live in Colorado, so to me, everything east of the Mississippi is always damp.

Look at Whipped Dog's synthetic, it's what I've got. And I use it at home as well.

As far as your brush staying damp, it could affect the knot and cause shedding, boars breaking, I'm not not sure. Maybe other smarter brush guys can address that.

For me, I hate wrapping up/confining something wet, especially with other stuff that can also end up musty/funky, or eventually moldy. Sitting a brush horizontally on a sink causes dry times to really increase. A boar will stay damp about 36 hours, badgers and synth dry much faster.

I have a Wee Scot that's adequate, but just barely. I have a Whipped Dog silver tip in 20mm, set at 45mm loft. It packs small and lathers big. And the Whipped Dog synth. And I've traveled with my Semogue 1520. I don't have anything against boars, and have been using a Semogue 830 more than anything else at the house lately. They just hold damp for much longer.

I have a shorty razor which I use for travelling. Or if my bags are getting checked and I am worried about theft I take a GD. I use a kangaroo leather travel strop that rolls up into a little container, and a wee scott brush and shave stick. All fits in a Dopp kit no worries.

I bought a synthetic from China for .99 in the bay. But it ain't much. It does, however, dry quickly.

Straight (2 actually), strop, turnback travel brush, and either a stick of Arko, or a tube of cream.
I "wrap" the strop against the outer edge of the suitcase, so it takes up virtually no space.
Everything else takes up no more space than a Mach-3 and can of goo.

Where did you look at the price for them? Connaughtshaving.com is the cheapest place to get it. I thought the 21mm was quite reasonable. In my oppinion, there is nothing on the market in synthetics that approaches the Muhle V2 for quality and performance. The face feel of the V2 is amazing...

Thanks everyone for your input. I will keep looking at the synthetic and travel brushes. I realized I may just be over thinking this. I could just forgo the brush and use can of goo, which is how I shaved the first two days I used a straight. In researching brushes I learned that they should be dried bristles down. I didn't know that. I made a drying rack in 5 minutes with a piece of 3/32 stainless welding rod and a nice saucer that came out very well. I'll post pictures in the brush section when I get to it.
