Travel Brush Query

Because you lot were foolishly out having lives I snagged this off the bay for $4.50. Guess I will need to re-nib the brush because I definitely want to use this kit.

Any advice, guidelines, pre-requisites, arcane measurements, secret techniques, etc. on refurbing turnbacks would be appreciated.

I guess because it's 80 years old, I don't know what it is, I don't know where its been, I don't know who's it was and it's a little creepy.

Maybe give it a good cleaning and try it before you throw it out?

In my book a well broken in boar (I think that is what it is) beats any other kind of brush so you might have your best brush ever here. Would be a waste to displace it without trying.

Looks like Welsh, the date: Nadolig is Welsh for Christmas if I am not totally wrong - what happens once in a while:biggrin:

Google agrees with you ... further research indicates that "Oddiwrth" means "from," and in the context, we can assume that "A" means "to."

So the complete translation appears to be:

"From Mam to Harry"
"Christmas - 1930"

That sure is a beautiful kit.

The brush looks to be in serviceable condition, I too would clean it and give it a few spins before deciding whether to re-knot it.

Regards.

Jakob

+1, clean/sanitize and give it a try before you set your mind to re-knotting it.

Anybody remember when you could actually ask a question around here and get an answer? When answering a question was seen as an opportunity to help, instead of merely an invitation to spew personal preferences at people?

Sorry I even asked, now.

I missed something.

Anyhow, you have options. Ambrose sets and ties fantastic knots, Rodd sets knots, Bob (cooncatbob) sets knots, Bernd at Shavemac would be a great option but it would cost you more. If you want to do it yourself there are many threads on here about what to use and how to do it. One common recommendation is marine grade epoxy. And it appears you can't go wrong with a knot from the Golden Nib.

You did not miss anything. A bunch of people ignoring the question asked so they can bully me about what to do with a piece of my own property is NOT helpful, nor does it answer the question asked. And the fact that I had to get pissy before someone (other than DGS) offered an actual answer would seem to prove that very simple point.

Thank you for your information.

Eh, people are opinionated especially intelligent people. All in all we are a good bunch. Hopefully you have enough to get you started. That is a very nice looking set.

I think I missed something too...I've seen nothing but great replies but I'm a little clueless, especially when I haven't had my morning coffee. :001_smile

Great looking set, I would definitely have the set cleaned and serviced. Great addition. Keep us informed on what you decide to do with the set?
