Travel Advice Needed

Okay, there's a good possibility that I may be going away on vacation. My original idea was to carry my old can of shaving cream with me, and purchase spare blades when I reach my destination (being I am planning to carry my luggage over, and safety regulations prohibit DE razors on board.) I keep on reading of people taking brushes and soaps with them when travelling. If so, is there any advice for travelling?

When I travel I usually check a bag and all my DE gear goes into it. It only takes a bit longer to pick up the checked bag, and then I'm sure to have the shaving gear I need. The length of the trip determine's the size of the bag, and I for one refuse to give up my DE shaves. :001_tongu

There's a page about airport security on Wiki.

I usually bring a soap with a cheap brush or I bring my $2.20 Palmolive shaving cream. You could always buy some blades when you get there or mail some to the hotel where you are going. Check with the hotel first.

I really like using the C&E travel brush with a Taylor of old Bond Street shaving stick. It's nice because you get great lather right on your face, you don't need to worry about dragging a bowl with you.

I'm with you there guys. Perhaps I'm wording it wrong. I am not planning upon leaving my DE razor at home for a cardtrige. I am planning upon leaving the blades themselves at home and picking some up. My main concern has been about the brush and soap in terms of travel and usage. My plan as of the moment is to pick up a cheap brush from Bed Bath and Beyond (Van Der Hesen, I think.) Is there anything else I should know before travelling?

blades go under the plane. dont try and sneak them in cabbin baggage or the TSA will make sure youre not hiding anything on your person. Thats the rubber glove treatment!

I say, just bring whatever you normally use!

Find an Rx pill jar that your brush fits in and either a shave stick or a travel tin for your soap. Personally, I don't like shave sticks. I got an aluminum Gold Dachs soap 'tin' with a screw top from Em's Place and pushed a puck of MWF in it. I bought a Müle nickel razor case that holds my razor and my blades. A little pricey, but pretty cool. Lastly, I just put a little aftershave in a travel bottle and I'm ready to go.

I leave my brush at home. You can whip up a nice lather just using the palm of your hand. It works with soaps as well as creams.

My basic travel kit consists of a Slim Adjustable, a pack of Astra-SP blades, and a handful of samples of creams and asb. Another good way to go with the software is an all-in-one product like Jack Black Beard Lube. PSO, Cream, and ASB all in one tube.

You could also just pack a DE and pick up stuff at the local drugstore. There's some mighty good stuff still available in stores ... Nivea, Neutrogena, KMF, Tom's of Maine, Burt's Bees, etc. Blades are becoming increasingly scarce, so if you have a favorite, mail those ahead to the hotel. Any DE blades you do find in stores are likely to be house-branded blades made by the American Safety Razor Company.

Also, I lower my standards and expectations when I'm traveling. I don't even try for a BBS shave. I just want to keep myself looking clean and presentable.

Besides, when you get back home and indulge in that first full-blown shave with your completely equipped gear, it makes it that much better.

I just got back from a two week trip. This is was my kit...

I carried the tiny Wee Scot, razor, Speick and tub of cream on with me, checked a pack of Feathers and had great shaves every day.

I would not count on finding blades too easily....If I was not going to check a bag I would consider mailing a pack of blades to my first hotel.

That 35mm film can fits right over it....learned that trick right here. Works perfectly. It is like the stick was made for the film can.

Also the film can serves as a tiny soaking "mug" for the Wee Scot. Nice and neat.

Another thought: Don't pack anything into your travel shave kit that you can't afford to lose. And if your luggage goes to Dallas when you're headed for Denver, be prepared for a quick trip to the drugstore to grab whatever you can, even if it means a can of Barbasol and a 10-pack of orange Bics.

Even though I only paid $6 from my fat-handled Tech, I did not want to risk it in my checked luggage....it and my brush (in a 50mL centrifuge tube) traveled in my carry-on both ways.

I have my travel kit down to a small enough size that it easily fits in my backpack, with my laptop, as a carry on when I fly. Usually have to check a bag so blades and my small Swiss army knife go in the bag.

I don't like to check my bags, but I sometimes do. I use a ball end Tech for travel. I carry my brush, a synthetic because it dries faster in a toilet paper tube and a camping supply 2 oz bottle of Kiss My Face pump cream. Of course, a longer trip means a bigger bottle. It would be nice to have some ready made stuff. But I started using this stuff in a pinch, and it worked. Besides, can't find what I am looking for. If I'm going light and don't want to check, I carry a Trac II. One reason to take the train. And, yes, you can shave on the train. On advice of this forum, you wait till the train stops at a station, which they do periodically, and go quick and shave. You can ask the car attendant on this.

Schwert, what is a centrifuge tube?

A 50mL flip top (or screw top) polypropylene centrifuge tube fits the
Wee Scot nicely...a bit longer than needed.

the first really good shaving brush i ever bought was from crabtree and evenlyn - and it's a traveler - the head unscrews from the (hollow) handle and then fits inside it to pack away - it has a cap on the end with holes in it

of course, i always allow it to dry thoroughly before packing it away - but pretty handy deal

i used to carry a cake of soap, and pack it back into a cardboard box after it dried, but i think i'll carry a sample tube of cream from here on, and just do a palm lather while i'm on the road

just bought a second super speed for my travel kit - and i do have a question about that - other than the leather cases i see for merkurs, etc., is there a handy way just to cover the head of a tto when it's loaded with a blade? i'm thinking of something along the lines of the plastic toothbrush head covers i've seen

i suppose i could dispose of the blade, but we do a lot of weekend trips where i only shave once while we're gone

any ideas?
