Transition from DE to straight

Hi

I just started using a DE, but I am wondering when I should consider to start using a straight razor? Or if I will ever even need to.

I switched to DE because I wasn't get a good shave and the blades were expensive for the cartridge razor. I am still learning the DE and it's a bit painful so far but I am confident it will turn out well.

I am just thinking about the future.

Thanks

Well, if you want a straight razor now, make the switch.

If you know how to make good prep and lather, then, the learning curve with the straight razor will be easier.

My advice, wait a few months where you will know a bit more on how to shave and then make the switch.

Will you NEED to swtich from DE to straight? No, but it is fun. I just made the switch myself after DE shaving for over 2 years. Its different, but fun.

I'll 3rd what the guys above said. Get your prep down, then decide if you want make the switch. Otherwise, the timing really doesn't matter.

I'll also go along with what's been said. I made the switch after just about a year of DE shaving. The learning curve is a bit longer, and there were times I wanted to just give the straight up. But I stayed with it, and after quite a few straight shaves I now feel that it has indeed been worth it. :thumbup1:

I think that variety is the spice of life. Single edge, double edge and straights. I had my first full shave today with a straight. It is certainly a learning curve. I'm looking forward to the journey of straight shaving but I'm really looking forward to being able to walk into the bathroom in the morning with no idea what I'm going to shave with but being able to do a half decent job with whatever I choose.

I switched after shaving with DE for a couple of months, just couldnt resist. Like everyone said, it really helped for me to know how to lather etc. If your interested already (like i was) then you wont be able to resist long.

Is it quicker to shave completely with a DE or straight razor?

i will second what was said above. takes about the same time as DE for me now, when i first switched it took a lot longer. DE is great to learn some of the basics you will use in straight shaving (direction of hair growth, prep, confidence with a really sharp object  ).

+1 on variety... I'll be adding a straight to the line up as soon as I can dig up the scratch to have my granddad's old Red Injun re-scaled & honed.

At the point I'm at with the straight, I now can shave quicker with my DE than my straight. But I'm still on the learning curve with the straight, but its getting better with every shave. I'm sure that in time I'll be able to shave just as fast with my straight as I can with my DE. But then I wonder, Why rush the shave?
I look at my shave as some quality time for myself. :thumbup1:

I think you are doomed to try it now that you have the thought in your head. It is fun to develop a skill that few have in this day and age. For me the difference in time is minimal.

Good luck.

Give it a try, but as the gentlemen said above, work on making that lather as best you can. I started with a straight and now enjoy shaving my face with DE's. My head, not so much yet, but working on it. Also practice with using both hands with your DE while you still have it:001_rolle

Kind regards,
