The Shootist
Once Upon a Time in the West

Once Upon a Time in the West
Unforgiven
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
The Searchers
Tombstone
The Wild Bunch
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Blazing Saddles

True Grit, the remake.
McLintock!
Big Jake

Little Big Man
Support Your Local Outlaw
Support Your Local Sheriff

A few just outside my list:

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Shootist
3:10 to Yuma
The Ballad of Cable Hogue

The Magnificent Seven

And a few that fall just outside the traditional "western" genre.

  1. The Searchers
  2. Rio Bravo
  3. Tall In The Saddle
  4. Shane
  5. Hombre
  6. The Westerner
... after that, it gets kind of mixed up, "depending" on my mood and what I've been watching recently.

The Proposition - written by Nick Cave
Wild Bunch - other Peckinpah westerns are a fun watch
Leone/Eastwood spaghetti westerns were entertaining
Easy Rider
Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai

I found Seven Samurai a far more interesting movie then it's re-imagining as a Hollowood western, Magnificent Seven (1960).

I probably need to make sure that at least one Jimmy Stewart western always appears in there somewhere. Probably Night Passage ... not that it's his "best" but the one I like best.

Ohhh, good lists. I can't put this in order, but
The Searchers
True Grit (the original)
7 Men From Now
Ride The High Country
Unforgiven
Shane
The Naked Spur
The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Treasure of the Sierra Madre (kind of a western)
Hearts of the West (kind of a western)
oh, and just about anything with William S. Hart

How have I not heard of this film before? The write up sounds great, and I love ANYTHING with Ray Winstone.

Hard to know how well it was distributed, promoted outside of Australia.

Winstone aside, how well was Sexy Beast distributed?

Hmmm, I could make several lists (yes, I'm a western fan) just from one author or actor or director. For example, here's a list of my favorite movies based on Louis L'Amour novels, in no particular order:
  • The Sacketts
  • Conagher
  • The Quick and the Dead
  • Hondo
  • How the West Was Won
  • Crossfire Trail
  • The Shadow Riders
From about 1940 on, I would watch almost any western with John Wayne, James Stewart, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Tom Selleck, or Sam Elliott, and many with Charles Bronson, Richard Widmark, James Garner, Ben Johnson, Gabby Hayes, Jack Elam, Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, or a number of other actors.

And then there are terrific directors like John Ford, Sam Peckinpah, Clint Eastwood (dual threat!), and even the spaghetti westerns from Sergio Leone.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
For a Few Dollars More
True Grit (original)
Django Unchained
High Noon
For a Few Dollars More
Shanghai Noon
Rio Bravo

Once Upon a Time in the West would probably be on there, if I ever get around to watching it. I have the DVD Somewhere.

I remember a western with a vampire they used to play on the early show when I was a kid called The Undead. I liked it then, but don't know if it was really good.
