TOP 10 FAVOURITE WAR FILMS

For 70+ years, I've always been the oddball. Not about to change for this list.

A Very Long Engagement (French 2004). One of my all-time favorite films. A love story with WW1 trench warfare as a backdrop.
On The Beach (1959). No war scenes, just Australia waiting for the nuclear cloud to kill off the last survivors on Earth from a nuclear war. My wife can't be in the same room with this one on. She finds it too depressing and refuses to watch.
The General (Silent 1927). My favorite Buster Keaton film. I never get tired of watching it.
J'accuse (French silent 1919). Near the end of this almost 3 hour film, there's a scene where the dead rise from the battlefield. It's said that the director, Gance, used 2000 soldiers on leave from the front for the scene. After filming, the soldiers (extras) in the film returned to Verdun where 80% were killed.
The Big Parade (Silent 1925)
Wings (Silent 1927). Who doesn't like seeing Clara Bow? Even Gary Cooper has a small part in this silent.
4 Sons (Silent 1928). 3 German sons fighting for Germany, 1 for the US. Also interesting was how hard it was for the mom to enter the US after the war.
Paths of Glory (1957)
Das Boot (1981)
Saving Private Ryan (1998) Probably the last Hanks film I liked (other than the Toy Story cartoons).

Related: I’ve been enjoying a “war movie” podcast Friendly Fire. It’s a good mix of serious and ridiculous. Also, they’ve introduced me to a number of films I’ve never seen.

I had the opportunity to work as an extra in Glory. My reenactment unit spent a week on Jekyll Island, Georgia for the final battle scenes. It was an interesting look into moviemaking and a treasured experience.
The unit was also invited to work on Gettysburg. Unfortunately, while many of them did go, I could not take the time off work for that.
