Toolbox

Any suggestions for a small toolbox? I'm a renter and move frequently. I don't have many tools, just the basics. It seems like all small toolboxes these days are the same design, plastic, usually smelly, with one main compartment and a removable tray on top. Very uninspired.

I have mostly tool bags anymore. I have bags set up for types of projects like plumbing and electrical work each have their own bag of more specialized tools. I have one bag of general tools. That one is my favorite. It looks like this.

You're a renter? Well, I've been making do with a Craftman Tool Bag, like this one here, except mine is green and black. They're quite sturdy and work great if you don't have a lot of tools. Speaking of which, I could actually use another one. Things are getting tight in there.

The tool bag is a good option.

Another possibility is the bucket 'skirts' that are made to fit around a bucket (like the orange Home Depot one) and give you pockets and storage while also giving the bucket to hold bigger items.

I suggest you look at one of those rolling, two part plastic tool boxes.

The lower section is usually big enough to hold an electric drill, hacksaw, and big pipe wrench (three must have's for even a renter) - and the upper, detachable tool box holds the rest.

These are portable enough they can be moved easily, and even taken up flights of stairs.

I have a combination of tool boxes and bags. My daily use tools are in a small bag. All of my auto repair stuff is in a couple of large tool boxes. The power tools are a kit that uses the same battery, which is all stored in it's own bag.

I know a guy who does apartment maintainence. He has several tool bags and boxes for different purposes, which makes organizing for a job easier. One boxes contains the stuff for carpet laying, another for doing tile floors. And then there's his general purpose bag with the stuff that he uses all the time. Makes it easy for him to grab what he needs for the task at hand, although it does mean that he has several hammers, measuring tapes, screwdrivers, etc, scattered in all of boxes and bags.

One of the small-medium plastic boxes with compartments is good. I recommend buying reasonable quality tools rather than really cheap dollar store ones - they really do work better. Craftsman, Stanley or at least the premium house brand from Home Depot etc. Minimum:

Standard and cross point screw drivers small, medium and large size.
Slip joint pliers
Wire cutter pliers
4" and 10" adjustable wrench
8 oz hammer
Mill file
Junior hacksaw
Stanley knife (I presume you already have razor blades!)
Electrical tape
A few nails, washers, etc.
A basic multimeter is useful too

The next level up would be to add a cordless drill with some basic drill bits and screwdrivers and a set of wrenches.

get a tool bag or a roll up bag. I'm an ex-automotive technician and I always have one with my lower quality tool sets in a tool roll, or mechanics bag laying around for when I need to go mobil

Edit: Forgot to add, I just pick up some from a Military surplus store locally, or online. They've done the trick for me for years now. And I really use my tools as it was my trade for awhile.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

I might go with a tool bag and perhaps a separate small toolbox for my bike tools.
