Too much brush?

Looking for an upgrade path from my original newbie Tweezerman, I came across this in my interwebs searches:

Too good to be true, a silver tip at half price?.
My understanding to date is that silver tip is better with creams than soap (that's where I'm at at this time, mug lathering).

Checking out this baby's dimensions make me think it's a bit of a monster:

Ht: 132 mm Loft: 58 mm Base: 74 mm Knot: 25 mm

So is this less than ideal for a newb soap mugger?.

I can't comment on that specific brush because I've never tried or even seen one. One year into wet shaving though, I have found that the smaller knots (22mm or so) work best for me. When I started, I was sure I needed a bigger brush. However, the bigger knots just cover too much territory on my face so I don't have quite as good of control with them. Also, I mostly face lather now, but back in my bowl days, my big brush also made it harder to whip up the lather without a lot of it going over the rim. Of course, I could have used a bigger bowl. Finally, just look at the voting for the knot size for the proposed LE 2009 brush. I think that says a lot about size preferences in general.

On the other hand, after reading hundreds of opinions on this site, I must admit that the only way to know for sure is to give it a try. Fortunately, people seem to sell items that don't work out on this site for amounts that make the risk of trying things fairly minimal.

The loft is whats really going to make a brush feel big. That brush is fairly big and would be better suited to creams although it would work with soaps, it just wouldn't be the easiest. The longer the hair the more "floppy" it will be. Shoebox is very reputable and so are the Omega's.

The price is great, but for me that brush would be way too big and the loft too high.

It is tempting for the price, but I find my 23mm 48mm loft to be as large as I would ever want.

That is a big brush. Those are similar dimensions to the Omega Pro boar brushes. It will make your Tweezerman look like a tiny travel brush. Whether it's good for you is a case of YMMV. Depending on the density of the knot it should be a lot floppier than your Tweezerman. It will definitely hold more water and could be a lather hog so that you will have to use more soap/cream. It will take a little more time to build lather but should hold a lot more, be creamier and thicker, and feel a lot softer on your face. I'm not sure how it would work on hard milled soaps. I can't see face lathering with a brush that big.

I think it's a great deal and I'd be tempted to buy one except I've already discovered that I prefer a smaller knot with a relatively short loft. Handle size doesn't matter to me, but longer handles seem to work better in mugs.

This is a big, floppy brush - best suited for creams and lathering in a bowl - great price if that's what you're looking for.

I saw these also and was interested, but the words "outrageous and humonguous" kept popping up in my decision. You could buy it at that price and use it a time or two. If it does not work, I would think you could sell it for a couple bucks off. I have a big old vintage Simpson #59 (I think) that's a monster; I would not use it daily, but big and floppy is great on occasion.

I almost bought one but missed the opportunity at the time. Let us know what you think of it when it arrives.

It is about the same size as a Geo F Trumper large. It wasn't so much the size with that brush but the general lack of control. My preference is a large brush with firm and dense bristles, like a Shavemac 208, really big but not floppy.

Would love to hear impressions from anyone who has used this brush.

After some email exchanges w/Gary at Shoebox, I did a "360" amd ordered a Simpsons Wee Scott !:001_tongu

Thanx all for the input.

Likes like a nice brush, but I've come to like smaller ones (Rooney size 1) since I use soap, face lather and my soaps are in relatively small containers.

The one Omega I own is very good so this will probably be a great buy if you prefer larger brushes.

I'm not sure if you want to say it's a monster. Those measurements are the same of a double duck for Ht, loft, and knot. Of course my restored brush is a boar and won't be as floppy.
