Tom Ford- I shouldn't have tried that

Wandered up to the Tom Ford counter Private Collection counter. Read some good things about Tuscan Leather. Very nice. Fairly linear smooth leather with a sweet open. A more sensual take on leather than Creeds REL.

Awww nuts. It's good juice. Worse -the generous TF SA buried me in samples. All of which are also pretty good. I note with these TF scents, there is a vague similarity from one to the other much like many Creeds. I don't think that's a bad thing, but it is noticeable to me.

Italian Cypress is driving me nuts. To me, it's like a polished up and modernized version of Polo. Very manly, refined and dignified scent for B&B types. This could be a great daily scent. Blind sided by this one.

Tobacco Vanille i had already tried and it too was surprising, but I already have a vanilla pipe tobacco scent I'm happy with.

The longevity on these on me is great. Nearly tenacious. One the knocks is that the TF scents are quite linear after dry down, but if you like the scent I don't see an issue with that.

Darn ADs....glad I'm not into watches.

Let's see how long I hold out.

The good news is I was able to reject the Xerjoff samples a Basenoter sent me. Nice, but too pricey and longevity fell short for my preferences.

Of the Tom Fords, I only tried the Tobacco Vanille (too much vanilla note for my tastes but simply awesome longevity) but after reading your feedback I am intrigued and would like to sample the others...where would I find a Tom Ford counter in New York that is similarly generous do you suppose?

The TF counter at Neimans has always been generous to me.

I'm not sure in New York, but out here in LA both Nieman and Saks carry TF. I'd bet there are other distribution points in Manhattan.

TF has pre-packaged spray atomizers samples (which I much prefer over the simple vials), so I think they're probably pretty liberal with the samples.

I don't think I got special treatment per se. But I did make a purchase which no doubt amps up their willingness to cough them up moreso than to someone who simply pops up demanding samples.

But, I was there previously, bought nothing and they gave me three samples. Engage them a chat and I think the odds go up.

They are nicer scents than I thought. Good luck figuring out what you want to try. It's a broad range. They are all aimed unisex, but to me most all I've tried seem quite masculine. They all seem bottle worthy to me so far.

Thanks for the all the good info...wondering what vanilla/tobacco scent you have that makes the Tom Ford one superfluous.

Odori Tabacco. It's a little less vanilla prominent with slightly heavier tobacco. Probably a bit "heavier" overall.
But they are similar enough I don't want both. I have too many scents I love and never get to wear as it is.

If I didn't have Odori, I'd have pounced on TV for sure.

Gee, I wish the SA's here were that friendly. Went in, tried several scents, chatted up frangrances, and was given an almost dirty look when asking about smaples to test wear before I bought. Oh well. I might have gone back and bought that frangrance too, if I'd had a chance to try for a few days. Oh well. Glad you got a good TF experience! Definitely need to try that line someday!

Italian cypress is very nice, I have a sample the gorgeous creature @ Neimann gave when I purchsed the Grey Vetiver which I love. It has become my daily go to for work. Creed Tabarome Mille is just as adictive for me also. I am a Penhaligons fan by birth, TF and Creed are making some very interesting lines though.

Enjoy

The British Airways terminal 5 at Heathrow in London has a TF counter in the duty free area. I sampled a few of the TF fragrances, and was very intrigued by Oud Wood. I thought the vanilla in Tobacco Vanilla was too strong, but the combo worked so well I continued to go back to it. There was something offputting about the Tuscan Leather to begin with, but the drydown was excellent - pure leather.

Yes, Tuscan Leather starts with some weird-ish, but not unpleasant, herbs and rasberry notes or some such. But it soon kicks over to a very pure leather smell that last a long time. It may be too linear a scent for some tastes. Once it goes "leather" it stays there.

I was just looking for a TF Tuscan Leather review to refresh my memory about what's been written here. I tried Tuscan Leather for the first time and I liked it very much. I didn't get the herbal/rasberry note as you did, but that's exactly what I get with Charles Street. I think I wrote somewhere else that it reminded my of raspberry cocoa mix that my daughter likes. Very odd. I'll have to try the TF again later this week--maybe compare the two. Charles Street is definitely easier on the wallet.

Italian Cypress has been tempting me for a long time. Cypress smells great and I've not found many frags that do it well.

In complete agreement about Xerjoff.

aside from the italian cypress and tuscan leather, I really liked the japan noir and all of the musk series that have the white labels.

LOL way to dig this one up.

Tom Ford is undoubtedly one of my favorite lines. He does make incredible juice that projects well and lasts well into the next day.

Tuscan Leather is my favorite Ford scent. It is pretty much a "cannot go wrong" ordeal for anyone interested in leather.

Italian Cypress is a winner. I've been sitting on the fence about purchasing a small bottle for awhile.

Another one that I like that gets quite a bit of hate (due to the name) is his Oud Wood. Ok, fine, true, it doesn't have much if any oud in it. It doesn't smell like anything else I have tried with oud in it. It smells good to me, but has not been one of his popular releases.

when i was at the TF private counter right around christmas, they were searching for the last bottle of Oud Wood telling me that it was almost OOS everywhere and if i wasn't planning on buying it, it was being shipped out.

I don't think they were trying to push me into buying it or even suggesting i buy it. it seemed more of a "courteous" passing issue since i was looking around.

Maybe I was wrong. It really has terrible reviews on Basenotes and very mixed on Fragrantica. When I purchased my Tuscan Leather and Tobacco Vanille, the SA gave me a generous sample and had said it wasn't moving very well at their store (Neiman's in Houston).

I don't really care about the reviews, I like it.
