TOBS Mr. Taylor cologne vs. cream

Does TOBS Mr. Taylor cologne smell just like the cream, or does the cream somehow temper the scent?

Thanks for the help.

No. Completely different scents, at least to my nose. If you're looking for a cologne that smells like TOBS Mr. Taylor cream, try Truefitt & Hill Grafton. To me it's nearly a dead-ringer.

For whatever reason, I expected the Mr. Taylor scent to be very strong, bordering on overpowering even, but was surprised at how subtle and "cool" the cream was. I guess I'm wondering whether the cologne retains the cool subtlety, or is much stonger/warmer?--if that makes any sense!

The cologne might smell different than the cream, but it IS subtle and very classy and smells much more expensive than it is. I was impressed with it enough to buy a bottle, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm not too big on cologne scented shave creams so that's why I never tried the cream.

I also prefer Mr. Taylor cologne over T&H Grafton cologne but YMMV. I would suggest trying a sample of each and see where you come down. In my experience with sampling both Taylor's St. James and Mr. Taylor colognes, they tend to be pretty subtle and not as concentrated as many other fragrances I've tried. To some people that might be a bad thing, but I take it as a positive. Like any scent, if you over apply it, it won't be good. AFAIK Mr. Taylor only comes in a splash bottle with a shaker top, but personally I prefer a spray top/atomizer. No big deal because you can get pipettes and glass atomizer bottles online and decant it into that if you want. That's what I would do to control the application a little better. I recommend pilotvials.com for atomizers and such.

I originally purchased the cologne because I was so entirely captivated by the scent of the cream, which fondly recalled for me a warm, long-forgotten olfactory memory from the days of my boyhood. Not many fragrances for me evoke this response; hence I was eager to acquire a cologne that would extend the longevity of the cream. When I received the cologne, I was at first disappointed by the quite unexpected difference in scent. The cologne, as Mr. Crissman has so concisely described, to me also contains a sharp note of pepper, while retaining a ghost of the cream's fragrance. I found it to be a fragrance that denotes both the class and quiet sophistication of gentlemen from a generation long vanished. The cologne will forever remind me of late autumn in Stockholm, the city in which I first sported the fragrance. I plan to replenish my bottle when exhausted, but considering my rather voluminous fragrance inventory, that will be some time in coming. If you find yourself on the fence regarding a potential purchase of the cologne, my recommendation is to proceed. It is a rather affordable indulgence.

What originally took me by such magnificent surprise was how...cool...the scent of the Taylor cream was. As I said before, I was expecting something much more up-front, a little "older." The non-opressive masculinity of the cream really--almost literally--blew me away. I wonder if the cologne preserves any of those same elements? If not, I wonder what does? You've suggested Grafton for this reason, is that correct?

I used Mr. T for a long time and it is a great scent in a cologne. The cream, like most cologne scented creams are nice but I don't think is anything like the cologne.

It is a masculine scent in the dry down but goes on a little citrusy for my taste.

I have found the same thing with TOBS Shaving Shop...The scent of the cologne is a great combination of the citrus and woods, while the scent of the cream shares certain elements but is just ok, however it is very effective and I guess that is the most important thing!:001_smile

Unfortunately, a fragrance's characteristics can completely change when added to a cream or soap.

Some of the fragrances we enjoy can become entirely different smelling with even the muting of one particular note.

Mulligan:
Grafton is indeed the closest match in scent to the Mr. Taylor cream that I have found. Mr. Taylor cologne is, in and of itself, a very nice fragrance, but to me is quite different from the cream's scent. I obtained a large sample pack of Truefitt & Hill fragrances, which included Grafton, early last year by e-mailing a request to their Chicago office. Upon sampling Grafton, I purchased a full bottle. I don't know if they still offer the sample set gratis, as I see it is currently for sale on their website. If you'd like to have the balance of my sample of Grafton (about 1 ml), please PM me your address and I will post it to you.

I don't know, but I know Eton College cologne DOES NOT smell like the cream.

The cream is one of the best scents I've ever smelled, but the cologne is horrible. Smells nothing like the cream.

Hopefully this isn't the case with Taylors other scent/cream combos.

I totally agree here, Eton College cream smells divine, the cologne doesn't even smell related...
