Way lateMy advice is to forget the nonsense that open comb razors are inherently more aggressive than closed comb. There are mild and aggressive open comb razors just like any other type of razor. No special technique is required in my opinion![]()

Hairline cracks are VERY common in old Gillette ball-end handles. Most of the time the handles are pretty stable even with the cracks. There's a hairline crack in the handle near or on the ball. So it's a New Short Comb?
I shaved with the New Long Comb for the first time tonight. I have always been a steep, nearly riding the safety bar, shaver, and so that's how I was shaving with the New LC--and it was terrible, pulling, dragging. I thought the blade must be shot, but I knew it wasn't. Well, I figured WTH and tried riding the cap. Presto! Not only was the dragging/pulling gone, but the shave was super close, super effortless, and I had no fear of cuts, even in my problem areas. I couldn't quite replicate the angle directly under the chin and that was a little tuggy. But all in all it was an amazing shave! Thanks for the tip!View attachment 1540848
My experience with the NEW and Goodwill is that "riding the cap" I obtained excellent results. That's the way the instructions that came with the razor suggested to do.
I learned that very quickly with both the Old Type and the NEW. Once you get it sorted, they are uber fun to shave with.I shaved with the New Long Comb for the first time tonight. The only problem now is it has me re-thinking all my CC razors and thinking about replacing them with OC ones!I learned that very quickly with both the Old Type and the NEW. Once you get it sorted, they are uber fun to shave with.
No, no, no! That's not how this works. What you're supposed to do is simply add more razors. At the rate I'm going, I'll need to convert the garage soon...The only problem now is it has me re-thinking all my CC razors and thinking about replacing them with OC ones!

I've seen it more often than I care to.Especially when the seller describes the OC razor as being very rare,
check and see whether or not the base plate is upside down.
It's not common, but neither is it unheard of.
I've seen gold plated tech's described as "rare OC razor".Especially when the seller describes the OC razor as being very rare,

We will be awaiting with bated breath as to how it performs for you.If I didn't mention in this thread, I've ordered an R41 with the tortoise handle on sale at Muhle Shaving. Only $10 more than the head alone with the coupon I had. As my OC experience is limited to an Old Type SC and NEW LC, I am most curious how the R41 will perform for me. Probably be a week-10 days before it arrives.
Oh, who are you kidding? You'll forget all about it.We will be awaiting with bated breath as to how it performs for you.

I’m surprised you went for the R41–given your preference for mild razors. I’ll be interested in your thoughts once you’ve used it.If I didn't mention in this thread, I've ordered an R41 with the tortoise handle on sale at Muhle Shaving. I'm curious about it too. Is it flat looking or is there a little depth to it?But I won't.I want to see that tortoise handle!
