Time to give a Kamisori another try.

I had a Tosuke a while ago and tried it a few times and didn't really think that much of it so I sold it. I've been thinking about trying another one for a while because in hind sight, I don't think I gave it enough of a go.
So after looking around for a while, I managed to pick up and antique Kamisori on ebay last night. The seller is a US based Japanese antiques dealer and is more than confident that it is more than 100 years old. It come in the original wooden box. Anyway, I can't wait to get it now, hone it and again try the art of Kamisori shaving.

More like a razor black hole. Any nice razors that pass too close to his gravitational field get sucked into the singularity that is John's collection. I like to imagine that at some point it will reach critical mass and explode, creating a new universe where everybody has a nice razor to shave with.

The kamisori arrived safe and sound last night. I've honed it up today and I'll test it tomorrow. When I looked at the edge under to 60x loupe, I could see very small wavy lines running through the steel, a bit like micro damascus. Is this the same layering that they used in the making of their swords?

It might be! You may also be seeing the join between the hard steel of the stamped side and the softer unstamped side.

Yes, they are the welds in the folded steel.
