My issue deals with the taper of the tie from its widest part as it starts to get narrower as you go higher up on the tie. (See next post #40 for pics with measurements).

To my eye, it ever-so-slightly changes the silhouette of the tie to a more “boxy” look instead of a “softer” tapered look.

I have to see how it looks when worn to see if it’s noticeable or negligible.

Nevertheless, I am pleased with the work that was done and I’m quite certain that I will be sending additional ties to Tiecrafters. I have confidence in their work.

Yes, the stripey ties are definitely tapered differently than the rosette ties.

Given that both stripey ties are more aggressively tapered, and both rosette ties are more softly tapered, perhaps that was intentional in response to the particular pattern type? Is your craftsman thinking that one pattern responds better to one taper and the other to the other?

In any event, I suspect that the best course of action is to try both on a regular basis, to see which taper style you prefer ... or if it makes a difference at all ... and then when you send more ties for narrowing, you can include specific instructions about the type of taper you want. (Probably best to contact them in advance and talk about it first, and then include an "as per my conversations with Fred about taper style ..." note with the ties.)

@Doc4

Good idea. I sent an email to Andy at Tiecrafters asking about this issue and sent him some comparison pics. Aside from narrowing, they also offer “reshaping”. I wonder if that would address this issue. Honestly though, I think it’s fine. A four-in-hand knot may give it a more linear look but a “snug” half-windsor adds a bit more dimension and contrast.

I think it’s time for another round of ties to head over to Tiecrafters. :yesnod:

I am selecting two more ties to send to Tiecrafters. I was quite happy with the work they previously performed.

I just can’t look at all these ties that I like just hanging in the closet.

These are the Brooks Brothers ties two ties I’m sending to be narrowed.

The striped ties are 3.25” wide. You can see the difference.

Excellent choice! Can't wait!

Yesterday, Tiecrafters emailed me a copy of the receipt for my order so I am guessing that the ties should arrive within the next two weeks.

Awesome. I'm living vicariously through you! I have way too many ties, some older than i, that I just wear whenever. None too broad, as I used to be skinny. My wife hates the fact that I never throw any out!

When the new batch arrives back home, you will have to show us pictures comparing them with the first batch, so we can decide whether the work done on the first batch was better than, or worse than, the work done on the second batch.

... or if it's a tie.

"Got Shoes?"
So both ties have arrived from Tiecrafters....

PART I

This box came in a UPS mailer

Some Tiecrafters advertising along with another mailer is included should you place another order and the return label is also provided.

Now for the ties...

At first glance I thought that they seemed thinner than the last two ties ordered.

So let’s compare the previous two ties to the two I just received... :yesnod:

So the blue tie was one from the first order I had done. The orange tie is the one received today.

You can see the that the orange tie is narrower than the first tie. I had requested that the ties be narrowed to 3.25” which they both are at their widest point.

In the picture below, you can see the narrowed tie laid atop one of the new Brooks Brothers ties and you can see that it is even narrower than that one.

PART II

I measured 2” up from the tie’s widest point and it revealed a width of approximately 2.75”. The measurement on the first tie was 3”, the difference of a quarter of an inch.

Also the two ties received today were cut shorter than the previous two which I was happy with since the first ones I felt were too long after being narrowed.

This next picture I think demonstrates how just 1/4” can change the silhouette of a tie.

There you have it. The two ties on the left are the most recently altered while the one in the middle was from the first batch sent to Tiecrafters and the two on the right are the current style from Brooks Brothers.

I would also add that as with the first batch, the cleaning of the ties was very good.

I’ll have a better sense of how I feel about these ties that I just received after I have had a chance to wear them and see proportionately how they look.

Fantastic thread to read from the beginning. However given the time shipping cost i would buy new replacement ties
OP has fantastic taste in ties!

4 more out the door enroute to Tiecrafters.

I snuck a 20+ year Burberry in there amongst all those Brooks Brothers ties.

The tie all the way to the left is a seven-fold tie. I hope I don’t regret sending that one.

Great job on this thread, JG. One would think these small differences would look more subtle than they do.

From the photos, I prefer the latest version.

I will be interested in how they do on the seven-fold. I think I own one seven-fold tie and it definitely needs updating and probably cleaning.

It is the only seven-fold tie I own as well and I haven’t worn it years. Frankly, most of these ties I haven’t worn in years and yet, I still like them very much and want to start wearing them again on a regular basis.

The cost to narrow and clean these 4 ties cost less than purchasing one seven fold tie.

Bob,

I do not love that recent orange/ browish tie, except for the job TC did on it. Otherwise I agree with others on this thread that you have excellent taste in ties. Wear them well!
