I did something that only guys around here would do or be interested in. I shaved with three razors this morning using the same blade.
Here they are:
46-47 Gillette Aristocrat
1983 Black Handle super adjustable (plastic base)
1963 Gillette Fatboy
Now don't take what I am going to say to heart. Any of my razors might be in worse shape than yours. My "X" razor could have been dropped or the adjustments worn and your "X" razor may be in much better shape and giving better results, so I am not knocking any ones razor and that is a fact. Different razors also seem to like different blades and everyone's face is different or my wife would confuse us. YMMV. On with the shaveoff.
Here is what I did. Yesterday I rescued three Gillette's from the antique shop for a tenner plus tax. One was a three piece ball end, one a ranger, and one a fatboy. I know it was a deal, but since I have overpaid before cut me some slack. I have bid on a dozen fatboys on the bay and just couldn't part with the bucks. This morning I lined up the test razors and using a second day feather blade I divided my face up and went to it. One side one razor WTG, XTG and ATG then the other side another razor and so on being as fair as I could.
Results: My beloved black handle lost. It has a plastic base and the lower weight may have hurt it. Sad but true. I tried turning it up, but that wasn't the problem. It just didn't ride on my face as well and that affected the shave.
The Aristocrat and Fatboy were great. I dialed up the Fatboy and found that 3 or probably 4 compared with the Aristocrat. Did I really say that? Yes, I did. Call Ripley, believe it or not. The Fatboy is heavy and the handle is just a little longer. I like a longer handle. I am not giving up my Aristocrat, but I do see why a lot of people like the Fatboy razor! Dad used an adjustable and turned it up to finish. I may try that next time.
Your comments are welcome,
I have gone to raise my bid,
