Thoughts on the Ranger Tech?

In the vast two months I've been DE shaving I've collected a handfull of nice, and not very expensive, vintage Gillettes: three adjustables, and just last week a spiffy birthday red tip. They all shave great, but I haven't yet nailed down a strong favorite. I really like the red tip!

MY RA has subsided substantially, but a local antique store has a 1941 Ranger Tech in a case at what seems like a very fair price (sale next weekend!). I've thought about maybe someday picking up a 40s SS. Don't need one, but they just look cool and are rated so highly. From what I've read, the Ranger would offer a more aggressive shave than the 40s SS - which is not a problem.

I seem to favor chunkier razors/handles, so I need to look up how the two would compare on that front. When and if I decide to pare down to just a couple faves (not right away :) , I could always move a few on BST, but I believe as a noob I need to accumulate more time+posts here, correct?

Any thoughts on the Ranger Tech from those with all wisdom would be much appreciatated. Thanks.

I'd pick it up if the price is good! They don't come by as often as other gillettes :)

Will provide smooth mild shaves and will last many years! :D

In my experience, I can't tell the difference in aggressiveness between my '41 Ranger and my '47 SS. I'm not saying there is no difference, just that there is not a significant difference between my two examples. Either will be less aggressive than your Red Tip. The Red Tip also has a fatter and heavier handle than the Ranger/SS. If the price is good, I'd go for it. It's a good razor, and if you don't like it, it shouldn't be hard to move.

I have a 1941 Tech Ranger and a pre-war Fat Handled Tech (with the triangular holes). Both are nice mild razors. I much prefer the fat-handled Tech (though I replaced the handle with something more substantial). The Ranger is extremely mild--but not a bad shaver, IMO. I sometimes use it if I'm shaving less than a full day after a very close shave.

I appreciate the feedback, gents.

I haven't seen a 40s SS in the flesh, and I've intentially resisted fondling the Ranger Tech. It does look slightly dainty through the glass case, though, particularly compared to my large hands. I may not be worthy.

I love my Ranger Tech, I can feel a distinct difference in the smoothness of the shave compared to a Super Speed. In fact, I have a 41 Ranger Tech and '46 Aristocrat that feed very similar to me. They are both smooth and feel aggressive, where my red tip is aggressive but the shave isn't as smooth. I don't know if that makes sense or not.

Makes sense. So many options to mix and match aggressive/mild razors/settings and blades.

It hadn't really occured to me to have a smooth and mild set-up for those times when for example you want to shave for a second time in the day and/or your skin is a little irritated. Aggressive for perhaps when you've gone a couple days without shaving.

My Red Tip experience has been fine for the most part. It did make me pay once for shaving too fast and without sufficient care. I haven't tried a Feather yet from my sample pack in any of the razors. Astras, Personna R, Crystal, Derby and one Lab so far.

I have three 41 Rangers and all are mild shavers and definitely milder than my 69 black beauty. I would get it if the price is right.
