Thoughts on a few samples

Hey gents,

I received a 6 pack sampler from the shave den this week and wanted to share my thoughts on a few of the products I tried.

The GFT coconut was really nice. Pleasant scent and lathered very easily.

The T&H Rose isn't my thing. The scent is too floral (duh) for my liking. Very sweet. It did however produce a very nice shave, and it is a much denser cream straight from the tub than the TOBS and GFT.

The TOBS Lavender...dear lord...I don't know how you guys manage to keep that stuff on your face  It's like being punched in the face by a 50 pound bag of lavender petals. WAY too floral, even more so than the T&H. My girlfriend got a whiff of it and said it would be nice for her, but laughed because I had such a girly slurry all over my face :glare:

All three products delivered really nice shaves, but being so new to this, I can't say I could really tell a difference between the three besides smell.

Im looking forward to trying the rest of the scents this week and I'll report back and let you know how I like those.

One question, how is the scent of the Tabac cream in comparison to the soap? about the same? I bought this to get an idea of the scent before I grabbed the soap for more $. The cream doesn't smell too bad, but not too good either.

T&H, Trumper, and TOB all make some great creams. They have many that have little smell and others that are not floral, e.g., almond, (T&H) Grafton, Ultimate, Trafalgar)-----

Don't get me wrong, all three delivered nice shaves. I'll be sure to try other scents in the future. I just tried those two floral scents because they seemed to be really popular around here. Wasn't prepared for them at all though

I went and got a straight razor shave all the way up in Baltimore this weekend and my barber says he uses the T&H Ultimate Comfort at home. May have to give that a try

Yes, about the same, although I'd rather say they belong to the same scent family. (EdT smells different from shaving soap from bath soap from shower gel from deodorant from...) What I remember is that the cream is a bit sweeter; the soap after a while takes on a... more earthly scent, I guess, as the top notes evaporate. But look at it this way: there will always be people who'll happily take Tabac soap off of your hands :). (Or you could attempt to locate the cheaper Speick shaving stick: how that product lathers is more or less equal to Tabac.)

Ah okay. Thanks very much. Yeah the Speick was also on my short list of B&B must tries so maybe I'll grab a stick of that when I run out of blades.

The speick soap performs great but if you really want to experience that speick scent get a tube of the cream. :thumbup1:

A good observation.

You have some good brands there; find a couple scents you like and stick with those for a while ... branch out into all the other stuff once you have got your basic lathering technique down, so you can tell the winners from the also-rans. (yeah, harder to do than just say, but ... )

Nice color and shape.
I've ordered DirtyBird 1.5 scuttle in blue couple of weeks ago (still waiting for it), but I like the shape of this one a little bit better.

Great observations. Before you buy the Ultimate Comfort, be aware that while it is labeled "unscented", it does have a fairly strong lavender smell. I understand it is not "fragranced", but it has the scent because it has lavender oil in it. Since you don't care for the floral scents, you may not care for this one, either.

Starting with samples is very smart. You may want to try more samples with different scents to get a broader exposure to different scents. As has been pointed out and as you have observed, all of those you have are excellent brands and provide great lather. Hopefully you'll find scents that you like.

Nice post! I'm still thinking about having "girly slurry all over my face"...:lol:

Ah! Thanks for the heads up! May want to get a sample of that as well.

I love you guys who share the small details with noobs like me. Just like when I bought my first bottle of witch hazel, nobody warned me it smells terrible.

I bit the bullet and ordered a sampler pack from T&H last week. Should be here any day now. Looking forward to trying the Ultimate Comfort to see if I like it

Speak of the devil, as I was sitting here eating lunch they showed up.

Actually, 2 sets showed up. Must have accidentally ordered 2 cause that's whats shown on my credit card statement as well....oops :001_rolle

Let us know what you think about the T&H UC, as well as the others. :thumbup1:

Dude. Wow. Just got around to trying the UC. Used the deliciously neroli scented pre-shave oil, followed by the UC cream (what a lather!) So smooth I forgot I was shaving! Nice scent, just a HINT of lavender, nothing more. Then the UC ASB, milky and smooth, delightfully scented, actually smells and feels JUST LIKE the Jack Black aftershave gel. Which could be why I like it so much.

Face looks and feels great. I'll try the rest of the sampler pack, but this is gonna be hard to beat.

Congratulations! Sounds like you may have just found your new favorite. :thumbup1:

Well Gents, none of the rest of the sampler are for me. Trafalgar, Grafton, 1805, West Indian Limes, Almond, Lavender and Rose are all big No-go's for me. All due to scent, not performance. I'll be sure to do the right thing and PIF the other sampler I accidentally ordered.

I am however in love with the Ultimate Comfort. Great stuff.
