I concur Randy. These stories are legendary when you look into them. And what's more, many of those gents never bragged or needed to show off. Their lives spoke well enough of their courage and energy.
Another I would love to see made into film is the story of Mad Jack Churchill. This chap carried a Claymore into battle during WW2!
Either of these two would have done to ride the river with.
The part about getting the signature from the German officer makes me think of *Inglorious Basterds* where Brad Pitt's character says "Bonjourno" to Hans Landa.
Great life-story, sure beats "for 45 years he worked in the main headquarters for ABC Corporation in East Anywhere, eventually retiring to a modest life with his wife Jane."
How totally demoralising. I'm too close to 40 and haven't done 1/2 of what he did by 25.
In other words, the world needs more storys like that - minus the horrors of war preferably, but it takes the worst of situations to bring out the best in any of us.
