What's new

this is why i love and hate B&B its all about a coti

well i was having a chat to Alf about jnat edges and we ended up moving to coti's and i stated that i may get a cout because ide rather a thin hone instead of a barbers hone sized coti and i ended up buying a nice little la vienette combo off him and i got it not too long ago i think it was about two weeks ago and my first edges were crap but i kept to it even when i felt like throwing it out the window and as the edges improved i tryed using unicot honing and noy i can get HHT3 all day long and even a few that have been in the low HHT4 range ive really enjoyed using this stone and working out what the stone is saying ive still got along way to go but its been a great thing to learn.

so last night i thought why not use the slurry stone on my nice semi old skinning knife that doesnt see a stone harsher than a washita so the swarth built up and now im hooked im going to end up with more of these nice hones i think and after that i will be after an old dinged up hone that is no good for razors for my good knives i dont want to dish the hone ive got now using knives on it

but ide reccomend you break out your slurry stone and give it a go on a knife with good steel you will be stunned at the edge you will get and it gets you there quick

first RAD then SRAD and then KRAD and even later HAD i can see this as an expensive journey

so now i have a question what would be a better aproach to knife honing a small coti or BBW?

thats nice!..enjoy every edge off it...try some mineral oil on the long stone..and the small stone can be a travel stone or if you wanna do X strokes on it..

ive been using baby oil after plain water to finish the edge off and coti edges rock
i doesnt take long to make a slurry its very fast to make a slurry using the little stone

how do i raise slurry without dishing the stone because the hone is too narrow ?

Heya Kirk,

I am the original owner of that rock. What I was doing was honing on the wide side where the yellow and the bbw meet. I was getting great edges from it.

As far as a hone for your knife, a BBW is more than enough, but that does not mean you can't use a coti. Try some sort of honing oil (I use Norton honing oil) or machine oil on it. I think you will like the finish with those mediums as well.

Good luck, and welcome to the world of the Coticule. I said, way back when, that I would never get more than one.....now I currently have 4. 2 La Dressante Bouts, a 30X100 La Veinette Combo, and a 75x200 La Dressante. I have also sold 2 including the one you have. Enjoy it, it's a great little rock.

Welcome to the slightly less dark side. I've only got three of them but I can see them multiplying in the future. A great man once said "They're Grrrrrrrrreat!"

@ jon dont worry about the stone its getting well used and looked after when i finish i use that side too.
any tips on using it ?

im getting used to it and getting great edges and i can do half strokes on it after a bit of practice no pun intended ha ha

I does great with both dilucot and unicot Kirk. If you have any smiling edge razors or razors that have any kind of warping that thin hone will really shine. Just take slow strokes, speed will come with time. I remember one blade I honed on it, I was topping hairs on my arm coming right off the slurry. This was right before I went to water.

Be sure to spend plenty of time on your bevel set if you are doing a full hone. When the bevel is ready for refinement you will get a nice catch and stop with the thumbpad, and it should shave arm hair without effort. From that point start diluting until slurry is gone. Do at least a couple sets of halfstrokes (about 30 per set) on water then start doing very light x strokes rinsing the ston about every 20-30 strokes. you will know when you are getting there when the water starts beading up on the edge of the razor. When it does that keep going until you are getting a good undercut of water (water will come up on the edge instead of beading). Do about 30 x stroke as light as you can. Strop and test.

With oil on that rock I would only use one drop and spread it good with your finger. I have started stropping real good before going to oil, about 60/60. Do about 30-40 light x strokes on the oil, strop 60/60 and test again.

Don't be discouraged if you don't quickly get the results you want. Keep practicing and it will come, the La Veinette is a consistent vein that is pretty easy to learn.

Good luck and feel free let me know if you have any more questions.

I used to use all halfstrokes during the dilution, but latley I only do it if I am having any trouble undercutting slurry or water. I use mostly x strokes with light pressure. Remember the thinner the grind on the razor, the lighter the pressure you want to use on the hone.

Kirk, glad to see you are enjoying the stone, it is a very nice stone, I just did not use it much. I have transitioned to JNATs
