1984 - A methyl isocyanate leak at a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India kills more than 3800 people outright and injures 150,000 - 600,000. Six thousand of the injured will die later.

1736 - Astronomer Anders Celsius takes measurements that confirm Newton's theory that the earth was an ellipsoid rather than the previously accepted sphere

1854 - In what is claimed by many to be the birth of Australian democracy, more than 20 goldminers at Ballarat, Victoria, are killed by state troopers in an uprising over mining licences. A league of gold miners in Australia, which was then a colony of the United Kingdom, launched a revolt against their colonial government over miner's licensing and a lack of representation despite taxation via that license.

1967 - 53-year-old Louis Washkansky receives the first human heart transplant at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.
