I was looking around for a straight razor for a newbie and found a Fromm 72R 5/8, very plain scales. Is this an OK starter razor? I would have to send it out to a honemeister so how much does that usually cost? I just want to try it out first without spending a fortune.

You're looking at no more than $20 for honing. Some charge a little more, some charge less, but that's roughly the going rate. There's a list of honemeisters here. I'm rather new to this myself, but I think Fromm was a German manufacturer, so it so be a good razor to shave with.
i've never had one and i never will. the opinion of honemeisters about the new fromms is not very high.
