Thinking about buying a Merkur. But I've heard bad things.

Hey guys I was thinking about buying a Merkur razor for my birthday, but I have heard horror stories here on B&B. Mainly that the plating seems to wear off. One damning thread was this one http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/135882-Merkur-Finish-Question

I don't mean to stir up negativeness, but I would like to hear from you guys before I buy one.

I was thinking about buying the 38M Long Handle Matte Chrome

Sometimes Merkur do send a bad batch, i think 2 years ago they had a few bad batches w plating issues.

The fact is that despite their less than stellar plating, they make some undeniably great razors. Slants, Progress and some open combs that are efficient, relatively smooth and fun to use. Just don't expect it to last forever.

Merkur makes great razors, I personally haven't seen a stories of plating wearing off, I think if it was a big problem we would see it on here all the time?

I have however had razors from them with machine marks etc, the finish of the EJ is miles above it - however I think the Merkur shaves better, particularly the HD.

After buying a slant, I stopped using all my other DE razors. The plating is not perfect, but I don't care -- shaves better than any other razor I own.

I agree too...the EJ's are way better in plating.

I think sometimes they make a few bad batches, that is what the Op was concerned about. He read a old thread from 2 years ago.

Buy one, you will be amongst the many happy shavers here. A few members have had problems ... I have several Merkurs and have never experienced any issues although I take good care of my tools.

+1 Dave, I also have a hard time putting my slants on the shelf. Right now, 80% of my rotion. I use the 37c and 39c equally.

+1 for Edwin Jagger. I've had both a Merkur and an EJ, and I was very impressed with the overall quality of the EJ, not so much with the merkur.

There's always a chance of getting a lemon no matter what you buy, but I've had my HD 34G for 3 years and the gold plate still looks as good as new. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Merkur.

No complaints at all of my Merkur razors. I own 4 of them. My slant is the favorite of all of my razors...

I bought the HD new off ebay before I started using our B&B vendors. I do take care of it and wipe it down after most shaves because of my hard water.
