What's new

Think I will try an R41

I've been using a Merkur HD for the last 5 years. I can't remember but I am guessing it's a 34C. It cost $36 at the time.
I have no problems with it and I like it. I have been using Derby blades all along and they have done well together. However recently I have been trying Astra's and interestingly enough I am getting missed spots and areas that just aren't close. My right cheek always feels great unless I feel it sideways across the grain. Maybe it is just the matchup of razor and blade that I need to get used to; who knows.

But it got me thinking about trying something new. I don't know what made me pick a Muhle R41, I just kind of threw a dart. But afterwards I reviewed it and it seems like I may want to try it.

So, I think that soon I will be making a purchase.

I picked one up almost two weeks ago, it has gotten 90% of the work load since. It's a wonderful razor that performs very well for me. One of the most amazing things about it, is how different your other razors feel after getting used to using the R41 for a few days in a row. It really forces you to concentrate on your technique and gives VERY noticeable feedback. YMMV, but it's currently my favorite.

I started out with Merkur 34C, and picked up my R41 2011 about seven months later. It has been my daily shaver since, and my 34C stays packed in my travel kit. I prefer it for travel since it is a gentler shave, good for when I'm around new places with different water than home.

I've tried both the 2011 R41 and the new 2013 Rosegold R41 and both are beasts!!!! Now if you have had success with the Merkur 34c then the R41 may not be the problem it is for me. I've not been able to get either the Merkur 34c or the EJ89l to work for me but I'm much better with the vintage Gillette Techs and Super Speeds.

It is very aggressive, but I'm sure you'll like it. Just be sure to use a VERY LIGHT touch, like just the pressure of the razor itself. Even then it might take a few shaves to get it down.

I have the 2011 edition and used it as my daily driver for about 4-5 months. Had great shaves each time. I stopped using it because I got a Weber and really enjoyed the shaves with it. Then came the Cobra...anyway, hope you enjoy it.

An R41, huh? Well, it was nice having you among the ranks of the living.

Go hard or go home, I say.

I bought a 2013 Rosegold R41a few weeks back but have not used it yet.
I started out 2 years ago with an EJ89.
My first open comb was a Fatip and I really disliked the first week shaving with it.
But I perservered and now, teamed with a Tradere or Weber long handle, it's my go to razor.
It's the one I go to every morning.
Hope the R41 turns out as good when I get around to using it.

Mine has already shipped from the seller. I have no idea if it's a 2013 or 2011 or what. When looking for a seller I couldn't find any indicators for what year they were. I'm not sure how I can tell once I get it either unless it states it somewhere in the packaging. It is said to be arriving Thursday. I've ordered from these guys already (Semogue 620) and I say it gets here before that; by Wednesday...maybe Tuesday.

measure the width of the top cap/plate if it's 18.8mm it's the 2011 beastly model :) if it's 20.2mm it's the newer tamed version. I got my R41 in Jan this year and it was the older (18.8mm) model, so they are still kicking around at some vendors.
