What's new

These bad boys showed up today

Taking the plunge and trying to learn to hone. Pulled the trigger on these two and a Naniwa 1k,5k,8k and 12k progression. Wish me luck!

Yup learn to hone and finish on the 12k first.

The 12k will produce a better and repeatable edge. Once you have mastered honing and the 12k edge, you can judge if the naturals you have will improve your edges or if you are going backwards.

There are naturals that will improve a 12k edge.

Remember to set up a plate for lapping all those rocks.

From the 12k or maybe the slate, you can jump to the pasted balsa progression if you want to see just how sharp sharp can be.

On the Naniwas, make sure you keep going with the 5k until you get good feedback. That's not a huge jump but it is a kind of large one. Just not big enough to make getting something to fill the gap very worthwhile. Lots of guys do go from the Nanny 1k to the 5k.

If you have the coticule and the Vermont slate, I would say that the 8k and 12k Naniwa hones would be redundant. Off the 5k synth, no slurry should be needed with the coticule and the VT slate. The size of the VT slate off a coticule of a more diminutive size is overkill. Good luck.
