The world of scents

Gents, my 16 year old granddaughter has always been fascinated with the colognes I own. Since she was a small child she will regularly go to my closet to check out my colognes. She has always informed me what scents she likes and which smell like an old man.

On Monday I took her Christmas shopping. We stopped at several stores to finish our shopping. Our last stop was a beauty store. I decided to let her choose her first perfume. We chatted about top notes, middle notes and base notes. I told her to take her time and decide which 3 she liked. She sprayed several scent strips with various EDTs. She sniffed coffee beans between the scents. I was expecting her to choose Juicy Couture, Aqua di Gio or any of the scents marketed to teenagers. I was surprised when she narrowed it down to 2 very nice scents. Her final choice was Pretty by Elizabeth Arden. A very fruity and uplifting scent that I would expect a young lady in her 20's or 30's to pick. It was a nice experience.

Wow. Sounds like both of you enjoyed yourselves! She's lucky to have such a cool grandfather. And you're lucky to have such a precocious, analytical sniffer as a granddaughter! Seems to me as if you're helping to form the beginnings of a lifelong AD. You smooth enabler, you. :tongue_sm

Great story!

That's awesome, Andrew. I must say, having three grandsons who are 9, 7 and 7, I got just a tad emotional reading about your great experience with your granddaughter. I started to say something about how you have provided such a good example for her, or how the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree, both of which would be true. But to me, the real significance of this is that your granddaughter will forever remember the day she went shopping with you and selected, with much care and thought, her first perfume. She will remember and think about, many times in the years to come, as she reflects on her appreciation for perfumes, and especially, many years from now, when she comes across this first perfume again, smells it and is immediately taken back to the day she picked it out with you, and thinks of how you loved fragrances and introduced her to them, and of course, of how much she loves you. You created much more than a special moment with your precious granddaughter, Andrew, you've created a legacy.

Congratulations, and thanks for sharing something so precious with us. :thumbup1:

A lucky girl and a lucky man! What a touching story. Thanks for sharing it! I am uplifted for the day!

And we are talking about scents here. Can you imagine the ability in the future for a passing whiff of some scent to transport her back to that day with her Grandfather?
