The Unhearlded G or The "G-Bar"

I've been a Streamline lover since I first saw a picture of one, but I must say that when I first came across the GEM G - or as I believe they were officially called the "Heavy Top" or some such name, I fell in love.

The G is without question a beautiful razor and I was lucky enough to get one NOS complete with box, blades, cardboard shipping ribbon and dead cockroach. How the cockroach got into the box I will never know.

I find the G to be one of the mildest razors I own, and so rarely use it. I really like aggressive razors - fewer passes means less irritation. And so with SE razors I generally use my Streamline, my lather catcher and one of my favourite SE's, the Shovelhead.

But two weeks ago, I dusted off my G and have been using it non-stop. Great razor, two passes and I get a DFS. I can't get BBS with a mild razor like the G, and so I've stopped trying. And since I've stopped looking for BBS I've found that the G really can't be beat for sheer pleasure of use.

If you don't own a G, get one. If you own one an haven't been using it, dust it off and give it a go.

I love the look of the G-Bar, but it just can't hold a candle to the OCMM.

One thing I'd say is that GEM made the best quality TTO razors - bar none. The Micromatic line of razors are all beautiful. No question about that. But the G is as unique a razor as they come.

Not only are the Gem Micromatics very high quality, ASR/Gem brought the first TTO razors to the public about four years before Gillette.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gillette created their TTO because of the advent of the Micromatic!

I wouldn't be surprised one bit that you're right. I can imagine some Gillette big shot strolling through the shaving aisle of his local Walmart in 1930, seeing all of the empty Micromatic bins and getting on his cell phone to call the engineering department and telling them to get busy.
