The 'Tuckaway'

Hi all,

I have found a Gillette Tuckaway at my local antique shop and I want to learn more about them.
It's a made in Canada version. I have done a search here and found that those who have them, quite like them. However, I'm more interested in knowing more about its head design... ?

Is the Tuckaway modelled after another NEW design with a shorter handle ?
Are there any differences with regards to where they were made ?
Anything else you can tell me about them is always welcome !

Everyone's insights are much appreciated.

The Tuckaway was available in the New Improved (flat bade with holes), and New Deluxe (flat base, no holes). Both are fantastic shavers. My favorite DE is the Head from a New Improved on a custom handle.

If it is the New Deluxe version you can put the handle of your choice on it and enjoy some of the best shaves ever with it.

Yes, thank-you.
It does indeed appear to be the NEW Deluxe version (no holes).

How does this razor differ from the raised flat bottom NEW I hear so much about ?
To me, this razors base plate looks 'raised' and has a 'flat bottom'.... what am I missing here ?

Oh boy, The Tuckaway is a great razor, I had one but sold it as my Aristocrat OC turned up. But while it was here I got nothing but smooth a superb shaves.

I've also seen plenty of the standard NEW variety (like the razor below) show up in cases still marked "Tuckaway," and I'm pretty sure I've even seen a NOS set like that that was in a carton still labeled "Tuckaway" (as opposed to "Norfolk" or "Somerset").

I think we need pictures.

While we wait, I will once again shamelessly steal xillion's picture of the various NEW base plates.
Presumably, yours is the third one from the left. The raised flat bottom was made in England. It is 3 more to the right past yours, labeled "UK Long Comb NEW." The baseplate immediately next it has the same label, but it is a twin I pin (notice the long slots).
The Deluxe is a bit more aggressive than the raised flat bottom UK LC NEW.
