I just used a generic polishing compound, actually I think it was made to polish silver, but it is pretty mild and worked fine on brush handles.

Here's mine. I used Mother's California Gold Plastic Polish.

is the brush I'm looking to polish, would love if I could get this black to come out glossy

Simms is the maker I'm told(not in my hands yet, on it's way)

Not to jack your thread, just same excitement here to do a restore.

Well guys. I have it in! It is a heavy sucker! And as mike said actually set in rubber. So I've got the forstner bit out and raring to go!

Ok. So a few pics of the work in progress.

The first three are how it came.

After initial cleaning and one quick rub with flitz. Tons of tiny scratches to work out.

So I thought the white band at the bottom was soap scum. It is not!!!! I kept at it with a tooth pick until it was apparent that is the innards of the brush. What can I fill it with to repair the damage I have done?

Interesting, it looks as if the brush separated. Could it be the brush is a two part brush, that simply expanded due to the epoxy or rubber expanding? That's a tough call, either try and take it apart, clean it up then re-assemble it or leave it and try to fill it with something. I don't have the experience to answer that question.

Black Testors paint maybe?

Edit: Yours is slightly different from Stuarts I see now, I wonder if it separated?

It looks as if what Mike was saying about it expanding might be true. Maybe they are two part brushes and this one simply expanded. I don't mind the look with the white band, however i'm at a loss as what to fill it with. Something white that might be able to be painted? Spackling? Then covered with epoxy?

"i'm at a loss as what to fill it with. Something white that might be able to be painted? Spackling? Then covered with epoxy?"

White silicone seal (tub & tile caulk) if you want white or windshield silicone seal (available at auto supply stores) if you want black. Then there is no need to cover it with anything.

Please post some photos of your completed project.

Excellent ideas sir! I probably have some of the tub and tile laying around. But I am leaning towards black now... I will post more pics as the project comes to completion.

That knot looks awesome! Is that rat hair?

Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

It was a certified rat weave. Pretty sweet!

Ok. I've had a chance to break the two halves apart and dig some of the old epoxy (?) out. It took some patience and a knife, however I removed enough for the two halves to set flush again. The epoxy had expanded inside enough to make the top half slightly bigger than the bottom. So I drilled out a small round hole slowly with a forstner bit. Enough to hopefully relieve a bit of pressure and gain a few years of life back out of it. I also hope that the hole will give the new epoxy somewhere to expand a bit. I plan to do a thin layer outside of the new hole and drop a few drops of epoxy in. Hopefully my logic isn't too far off here.

A picture of the two halves sitting together flush!

Unexpectedly got the knot in the mail today! Very happy. Anthony at the golden nib should get mad props for this! He got my return and payment on tuesday and I can't believe how quickly he turned it around. Nothing but good things to say about TGN.

So I went ahead and played around with the knot. I like it at 52mm so that is where it will be epoxied. I still need to polish it up some more, however I could resist posting a pic. After the final polish I will paint the letting back in, and set the knot and reattach the base.
