The Supermarket Shave and a PIF

Inspired by the dilemma in this thread http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/352612-Rookie-mistake-perhaps?p=5235441#post5235441 and my suggestion to go to the supermarket and pick up some Tesco blades and Palmolive shave cream as emergency supplies, I did just that to see what the results would be like if I ever found myself in a similar predicament.

I used both for my shave tonight. The blades are completely unbranded, nothing on the blade nor on the wrapper but the outer wrapper says they were made in Israel and they are by all accounts Personnas. The Palmolive shave cream I think is well enough known on here.

I used just over an inch worth of the cream in a bowl and it lathered up very quickly and easily. It is never going to win any prizes for the scent, but it isn't unpleasant either, just a fairly generic soapy smell. The lather from that amount of product was good for 4 passes and touch up with a little left over. The shave itself, on the first WTG pass I didn't feel that it had reduced the beard by as much as my Feather or 7OC yellow blades. Whether that was because I was being a bit more cautious because it was the first time using both the blade and cream or the blade not being so sharp as my usual blades I'm not sure. I did a second WTG pass and this reduced the beard to about the same as 1 pass with my usual blades and software. Pass 3 was XTG and pass 4 ATG with touch-ups afterwards. I can normally only get 2 shaves from a 7OC or 3 from a Feather so it will be interesting to see how this blade performs on my next shaves.

Results? Above the jawline it is DFS approaching BBS, below the jawline probably a DFS or close to it. Not much in the way of irritation either and certainly no real difference to my usual setup. All in all a far better shave than I was expecting and certainly one of my cheapest yet :thumbup1: It is just nice to know that if I'm ever caught short I can get a decent shave from items readily available in the supermarket.

Now for the PIF bit. The Tesco blades are in a review thread here http://badgerandblade.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=8168
I've used one of the 10 pack so I'll PIF the remaining 9 to any member out in the colonies where these blades will be impossible to get who after reading the review thread would like to try them. So if you're in the US/Canada/Aus/NZ/SA it is first come, first served.

I notice that the review thread was started in 2006 so whether they are still the same blades as back then, who knows?

I am in Paris and I've done the same with Palmolive and Gillette Bleue Extras. It is an excellent cream, especially for €1.50. I have several tubes for back home. Palmolive and Monsavon soap are readily available i nearly all markets and provide great shaves. The Gillette blades are at least as sharp as Astras. We'll see how long they last. Looking forward to grabbing some Palmolive sticks in London. Some many great low end items in Europe.

Where I live is only about 45 miles from France as the crow flies but I can get there in a couple of hours. I feel a day trip to France coming up to see what sort of shaving goodies I can pick up :001_smile Will make a change from a trip to stock up on beer and wine.

This blade and cream combination is better than I first thought. 10 hours after the shave it is still at least a CCS

I might try this I have the Palmolive already(from Tesco) but haven't got the blades might pick up a pack later and see how it goes.

Have you tried the unbranded blades from Boots?

By all accounts they're the same blade. I have a pack and give a fair shave my results where pretty much the same as the OPs. Didn't feel much but the shave was at least DFS and lasted me for two days.

Just used a Boots blade...the shave feels great but lots of nicks and irritation. Will try the Tesco blades to be sure but assuming they are the same might give them a miss from now on.

Not in as IIRC one or two of the unbranded/store brands on this side of the pond have a similar pedigree to those Tesco blades so they may be a worldwide supplier, besides I have the advantage of a sister in law that works as a flight attendant so I have her pick up some of the local inexpensive shave goodies( I'd think asking for TOBS or T&H might be pushing it though)when she gets the London trip.
Just wanted to point you in the direction of the Palmolive shave soap sticks as a "just in case" shave agent,I keep it in my travel kit and even break it out to shave from time to time when not traveling.

Shave #2 update
Same blade and Palmolive shaving cream again. 4 pass shave (2 WTG, 1 XTG, 1 ATG) with touch ups. Comfortable DFS near BBS again above the jaw and DFS or close below.
This blade has certainly outperformed and outlasted the Astra SP which I have to toss after 1 shave because it is uncomfortable on the second. 7OC yellows normally start to feel like they are going off after 2 shaves so this Tesco blade is outlasting that one too. My skin feels slightly dryer than it usually does post-shave whjen I shave with my usual creams and soap (T&H, DRH, Proraso green tub), I'm guessing that the Palmolive isn't quite as good at moisturising as these creams but nothing that a little extra moisturiser won't sort out. If this blade lasts for a 3rd shave I'll be very impressed because I can't get more than 3 from a Feather before it really goes off.

I picked up a pack of the Boots blades today. I haven't opened them up yet but the insert in the blade box looks identical to the Tesco blades. On the cardboard wrapper it says made in Israel on the back so chances are they are the same blade. I'm surprised at the nicks and irritation, I've found the Tesco blade to be quite smooth and have had 2 great shaves out of it so far. Hopefully the Boots blades will be the same. However £2.55 for 10 at Boots compared to £1.90 at Tesco is slightly annoying :001_smile

OH! That was me who started the original thread. Very cool that it has an offspring.
I never did get to Tesco to buy the unbranded Personnas and Palmolive cream- the Proraso and Sharks arrived the following day and my shave was phenomenal for a first time using Proraso.

The Palmolive shave stick- I already own this and find it very underwhelming. Can't seem to get the lather off it.
The Palmolive shave cream- I must try following such a rave review, especially considering the price and the fact that I can't make the stick work for me.
The Tesco blades- I'll get them next time I'm out, must give them a go at the price of 19p each.

What an interesting thread that's come out of my lil cry for help. Good luck, all.

I'm thinking it might have been a bad batch or something because it is the only blade I have used that I found to be so bad I wouldn't use it again. Every blade I've used has always been acceptable at the very least. The ones I used came in the pack with the boots razor so I'm thinking of buying a pack separate and seeing if they are as bad.
