What's new

The Social Network

Just saw the The Social Network and thought it was awesome! I was taken back by how entertaining it was (considering the subject matter is not the most exciting one). The first scene was one of the best that I have seen in a long time. Anyone else seen it? Thoughts?

I haven't seen it, and I don't go to movies all that often ... but this is on my list of MUST SEE movies for this year.

I'm hoping its still in theaters by Xmas ... that's when I get in most of my movie watching for the year.

I love David Fincher, but haven't seen this yet.

There is an article in the newest New Yorker by David Denby giving it pretty excellent praise.

Noah, good to know you're into it, im looking forward to it.

Big fan of Fincher. I was surprised by how much Denby liked the movie (he hasn't been a big Fincher fan as I remember).

Just saw it a few hours ago, and WOW! I was just looking for a good way to waste a few hours, but the quality of this movie was much greater than expected. I highly recommend it.

Excellent sorta like the white man's Slumdog Millionaire.

Really? I couldn't disagree more. Loved Slumdog Millionaire but these two movies are completely different. The Social Network is an anti hero movie and Slumdog is the opposite. Your statement is overly simplified and pedestrian.

I think it looks good. I rarely get to watch a movie. The last adult movie I watched in a theater was, please do not laugh, ALIENS. And yes I mean ALIENS the first one. :w00t:
The only other movie in a theater I have watched since is Princess and the Frog with my 4yr old daughter. :thumbup1:
Maybe I should make a date with a bag of popcorn this weekend.

ALIENS was the second one! My personal favorite as well.

If you ever watch it again I DON'T recommend the super fancy deluxe director's cut. I found the original cut much better.

"Aliens" is awesome. I haven't seen Princess and the Frog but I've seen "Up", which was pretty funny. I just recently watched "O Brother, Where Art thou" with George Clooney for the twentieth time. :biggrin1:

I liked it. It went by very quickly for me - most movies I'll check my watch to see how far along it is, but I didn't once check on this one and it was over before I knew it. I wanted to see more of the story. I knew / understood most of the computer geek stuff, so maybe that helped?

I feel like they portrayed Zukerberg as the victim in the movie. Ohhh.. poor fellow lost $65 million to those twins.. Whatever. He's worth BILLIONS! I bet he has stepped on A LOT of people over the past several years. But, I guess he was the "winner" so he gets to write the history book.

They portrayed the CFO, Eduardo, as being pretty much absent for several months as the site was initially growing. He put up a few g's and then took it back.. Was he really due a ton of money?

It was interesting to see the beginnings of a multi-billion dollar company.

Perry, I didn't get the impression in your spoiler block at all.

I thought this was an overall fantastic film. As has been said, it presented what might be an otherwise uninteresting story in such a way that most anyone would be captivated.

What stood out the most for me was the sheer authenticity. I'm a computer geek by trade, and usually have to stifle my groans when movies try to portray technological issues. Not so with this film, as the directors chose to have Zuckerberg narrate his geekery in a rapid-fire manner designed not to inform the viewer what was going on, but rather to demonstrate Zuckerberg's intellect and creativity. If the producers had elected to actually try to explain the tech for the uninitiated, they would have had to dumb it down. They had no such constraints, so when he spoke of Apache, Linux, MySQL, Python, emacs, and wget, none of it was phoned in.

All the screenshots were real terminal emulators running on real KDE desktops. And the photo-scraping shell scripts he ran to get all the dormitory ID photos were authentic entry-level hacking/cracking. The nerd in me was thrilled.

Saw this a few days ago and it was amazing. I saw a free show on base and didn't expect it to be very good but it really delivered.
