The Scent of Gillette Foamy

I apologize if this has been covered already. I searched the forums and found a few people asking this question but no answer.

Does anyone know (or be willing to hazard a guess) about the fragrance notes of the cheap 'ol Gillette Foamy red-canned goo?

I was on the road and ran out of shaving supplies and a hotel provided me with a can. I liked the scent almost as much as I disliked not using my go-to Mama Bear or Proraso. Kind of a comforting, generic "man" soap scent, with some spiciness thrown in.

I'd love to find a wet-shaver version of that smell with better product or an EDT or AS that matched it.

I agree 100% with you. I have been wet shaving for 5.5 years and the only thing I miss about the old way is the sent of Foamy. To my nose TOBS Shaving Shop smells some what similar but I not sure. I hope someone can chime in point us in the direction of a quality product with the same smell.

I believe it smells like Gillette Sun Up: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/273501-How-to-describe-Gillette-Sun-Up

Also http://www.basenotes.net/t/295359/gillette-classic-shaving-foam-smell suggests that Prada Infusion D'Homme might be in the same line. One gent at http://www.basenotes.net/products/infusion-dhomme describes that as "...a blast of soda water and citrus fruit [that] settles down to become dry, soapy iris covered in laundry detergent musk and sodium bicarbonate. A little benzoin and vanilla hum in the background and a very light floral note floats on top...".

I confess... I love this stuff, and have a can going right now. Also the barbershop scent, although I prefer the scent of the red can the most.

If Gillette Foamy wasn't so stiff, dry and drying to the face it might have a chance at getting liked for a travel product (it does come in a travel size). If I recall it also made my face feel numb for a while. As is I would much rather take Barbasol if I am going to resort to foam in a can (also available in travel size).

just a thought, but could you mix it with a quality unscented cream like 70% good stuff/30% foam, just for the scent? Seems like a simple compromise

Thank you for this thorough response. I had never heard of Sun Up before. The thread you link to above is a fun read. I wish it was still around.

Did some product research today picked up a travel size can of Foamy so I knew what the scent was and not my memory of it. It to me and someone else It is almost dead on for TOBS Mr. Taylor. MR. Taylor maybe a bit "shaper" scent but to the two of us They are first cousins if not identical first cousins. Edit: I Rubbed a bit of each on the fingers of opposite hand, two hours latter if I didn't know what was on what hand I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I happened to splash on some reformulated Halston Z-14 today and while it is in no way identical, it has enough similar notes that I thought I'd toss it out to anyone subscribed to this thread.

Here is how Fragrantica lists the notes for Z-14

Top notes are cypress, gardenia, green notes, basil, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are coriander, patchouli, cinnamon, jasmine, vetiver, cedar and geranium; base notes are leather, tonka bean, amber, musk, benzoin and oakmoss.
