The Scandal Sheet: Straights and other stuff

Rigarazor was up today, got another very close shave with no drama to speak of. R41 with a new Durasharp. I need to dig out another GSB tuck from the bunker, they are really nice in the R41, for me. I also should order a few hundred more Durasharps before I forget.

My poor Proraso Pro brush has taken second place to my new Rudy boar but despite being a cheap handle, it is really a top notch knot for my tastes. And it's not really a lather hog, can't remember if it was before it was broken in, but it's workhorse. I face-lathered my MdC Rose today and it certainly didn't impact my skin at all. I need to remember that next time I get the itch to buy another nice brush.

Finished with the Veg, only a light tingle today so I know I was on my game.

Be well.

That is exactly what I used to go through as well. And also for me the migraine came after the aura cleared up. It got to the point where I would go to the hospital where they'd give me a buttshot of Demerol. Damn I loved that stuff.
It began with the doctor asking me if I could touch my chin to my chest. NOPE. The top of my head felt like it would literally blow off. A few minutes after getting the shot I'd be wandering around just enjoying the colours, the scenery and trying to be helpful to anyone. The staff would usually guide me back to a safe haven.
Now I still do get the auras but the resulting headache is very mild and almost negligible. But I have to wait for my vision to clear up before driving, golfing etc.
Sorry to hear it guys. Thank g-d for Amerge, Nurtec and Fiorinal w/ codeine. Never got to the point where I ended up in the hospital.

Demerol, huh? Did it cure the headache or just get you to a place where you didn't care?

Oh man, the headache was done...plus I had zero concerns or worries about ANYTHING. It used to be bad enough that if I was told to strip down, paint myself yellow and walk into traffic to get rid of the pain, I'da been looking for a paintbrush.

My French rattler was up for (Faux) Frameback Friday. I finally got around to taking it apart last week and correcting a couple problems with the scales. Took the opportunity to rehone it. Delivered a very nice shave today. Really smooth and glassy. MdC Rose provided the suds again, I guess it's fair to say that this is my current favorite soap. R41/Durasharp for the cleanup pass and Bog Water and Stirling Bonaparte EDT finished off a French themed shave.

Be well.

I believe they gave me demerol at the hospital about a week after my last bad concussion, when it had gone from bad to worse.

I don't even remember the CT scan (which I think was before the demerol) but I remember sitting in a bagel joint afterwards trying to figure out why the table was drifting away and why my arms were ten feet long.

Sounds like one I would have liked to have tried if it weren’t for the pain that necessitated it.

Yeah, boy it does have some interesting effects, most of which I found to be quite enjoyable. Like the probably annoying wanting to know (in detail) what someone else was doing.

Good shave today, Danshaku 70 was up for the straight (still sticking to my rotation plans, yay) and I loaded a fresh Durasharp into my favorite New SC. Decided at the last minute to use Mühle Sea Buckthorn. Probably didn't shake the brush out enough so it started pretty foamy but I loaded enough to make up for it. Everything was great, finished with the Veg and got some extra stingle where the DE had been but it faded fast.

Be well.

Another great shave in the books. Heljestrand MK32, it's lovely but not always my favorite shaver, but it was spot on today. Proraso Red made a nice lather. Cleaned up with the SC/Durasharp again. Starting to realize that this SC is maybe a little less carefree than some of the other DEs including the R41. No weepers or irritation but the blade feel is such that it will let you know when you're heading towards trouble. Very close and comfortable again, though. Finished with the Veg.

Took the remaining kids to the Mall of America and Ikea yesterday. Not my favorite venues but we managed to have a really fun time. Stopped back through our old hood in South Minneapolis for beef sticks and tamales from our favorite tiny grocery.

Today I think I'm going to do some raking. There's not a lot of leaves down yet, but enough. Turning over a new leaf this year (sorry) and trying to stay ahead of it rather than waiting until October when the leaves are six inches deep.

Be well.

It must be fall; I'm back to craving woodsy scents. I added a large drop of myrrh oil to the bowl today with my Stirling Beeswax. I will probably start using it with Proraso as well. I think I noted that with Proraso it interferes with the lather slightly, but with Beeswax, it made for a very nice, unctuous lather, a little closer to what I'd get the sheep base as I recall. The straight was the YSS Triumph, one of my favorite newer acquisitions. The Oumo brush was just what I was looking for today too.

On the DE side, I had a thought that maybe I should toss that Durasharp after yesterday and I probably should have listened to that. Got a few more red spots on the neck and a little less close. Not sure if it was just this blade, or maybe it was that I left it in the New SC rather than disassembling and wiping everything down like I have been with the R41. Either way, it was still a pretty good shave. Finished with the Veg, which, the myrrh really accentuates the normally subtle earthiness in the background, and broke out the Stirling Agar EDT (Tom Ford Oud Wood dupe). One of my favorite fragrance layerings.

Leaves did in fact get raked yesterday, there were more than it appeared so it's probably good that I got started, and the weather was perfect.

Finished one of two songs I've been working on, actually this was the second and it kind of intruded itself into the writing process for the first (which is still only about half done and I frankly kind of hate it already). Worked out the key and the chords and got the first run approval from Mrs. Scandalous. More of an English folk song style, kind of along the lines of Paul Simon's earlier work. Not my usual genre but it worked out well I think.

Be well.

Matt, with the exagerated smile of the spine but fairly shallow smile of the edge, are there any finicky little honing moves you have make? That blade really jumped out of the photo.
Not beyond the usual rolling x-stroke. It is very well ground, so it was very easy to hit the whole edge. Unlike some razors I've had with similar (but not as pronounced) profiles.

Shave today was ok. Couple things working against me: one, my prep was thrown off a bit as I ran out of my shampoo, which I usually use in the shower. So I lathered up with Stirling preshave bar before got in the shower. I think next time I will probably save that for after the shower, it left my whiskers nicely softened but my skin was not so slick as I'm used to. Face lathered MdC Agrumes with my RV/Semogue, and that was ok but I probably should have used something like Proraso preshave first. I did apply it after the first pass and that sort of helped. But overall both the straight and the DE wanted to stick to my skin a little more than normal. Straight was my Okina, the DE was the R41 with a fresh GSB. Managed to get a little aggressive on my throat just below the goatee today. Not much sting but some lingering redness there. I'll adjust my prep for tomorrow, if I forget to pick up more shampoo (which I probably will). The other monkey wrench in the gears was the teen deciding to cook something to bring for lunch, and then needing some intervention along the way to make that successful. But, all in all, we got out of the house in about the same timeframe as usual and honestly as much as the shave wasn't up to my current standards, I would have called it a top flight shave a year ago. So there's that.

Be well.

Today was a redemption in every way, except maybe the photo (the way the different shades of red clash is really bugging me).

I remembered that we still have a bottle of some kind of gentle shampoo which none of us really uses but it's decent enough and in fact was the product I first used when I started experimenting with shampoos for shave prep. It may, frankly, work better than the stuff I use for my hair. I went for MdC Rose today, mostly bowl lathered this time with the Vielong synth and wow, that brush really makes an entirely different quality of lather than the rest of my brushes. The Sankan wiped the whiskers away, I think I had finished it on my Escher for the last few times I used it, but I did a quick touchup with the arkansas stones and it was the perfect balance of smooth and sharp. No skin impact at all, which is how I like it. The GSB in the R41 performed similarly. Finished with the Veg.

Listened to some Jimmie Rodgers while sitting in traffic today. I wish I could yodel. I bet everyone around me wishes I wouldn't keep trying. Be well.
