The Return to the DE

I think i've returned to the DE razor!....for now;) Man, I really wish I could settle and finally land on one razor. Oh well;) Years ago, I started with the EJ DE89 and the Merkur 39C HD Long Handle slant. Wasn't sure if I was going to like the slant. I didn't. Used the EJ DE89 for quite a long time. It wasn't bad but I wasn't necessarily pumped about it. It was just "ok". A few years ago, I picked up a SS Timeless .68 scalloped. Again, it just "ok" to me. I know a ton of people love it. I tried a number of blades, some better, some worse. Then, on a whim, I decided to try a single edged razor. I started with the RR Hawk....Hmmm. My interest was piqued. Then, the Ikon MR-SE. Nope, too aggressive. Then, the General (both SS and Brass). Boom, awesome! I strayed and tried the ATT SE1. Nope, a little uncomfortable when compared to the Generals. So, I went back to my Generals for a few years...and disappeared from the forums.

Then...I randomly read about the Blackland Vector. Ordered. I think it's pretty awesome. But, for some reason though, and i'm not sure why, I ordered the Rockwell 6S, not long after the Vector. Yep, another random order. Well, I think I figured i'd try something with a smaller blade gap, in the hope that a more mellow razor would help me use up the hundreds of blades I had in reserve (Feathers, Kai's, Personna Reds, Personna Med Preps, Astras, and Nacets). I'm so glad I did. The 6S on plate 4 is absolutely legit. So damn smooth. No bite. No uncomfortable passes. Now, don't get me wrong, the Vector is pretty smooth as well, especially with a Proline blade. You can just zip around your face with reckless abandon. However, there's just something about the 6S on #4 with a Kai Stainless. It's a step above in my opinion. Now I have a Timeless .68 to sell....and a few Single Edge Razors (Generals and Vector) that are staring back at me. Not sure I'll get rid of those anytime soon. Just in case!!! Haha.

That Rockwell has made a lot of fans. I’m not surprised you’re enamored.

As for landing in one place. Dude that’s a mindset. You’ve already landed. You've landed in the wetshaving patch that has a bunch of toys for you to explore. So explore. No one ever said you had to find “the one” and stick with it! Well except every marketer ever trying to make you loyal.

Loyal is a construct man. An overrated one when talking things if you ask me.

Now I have a Timeless .68 to sell....

You meant .95 to buy right ?? :D :D :D
(I do find it a lot better than .68, and matched with Kai or Feather, for me works amazing - for what it's worth)

Sounds to me like you have your clear favorite and having fun trying few others, nothing wrong with that.

Ha. Nope! Had the .95. Didn’t last long. Too aggressive/too much blade feel for me. I have a rough combination of coarse stubble, weird growth patterns, and a sensitive neck. I’m a fan of mild. That’s why I like the #3 & #4 Rockwell plates.

Did you know that you could be imprisoned for shaving your moustache? Between 1860 and 1916, every soldier in the British Army was forbidden from shaving his upper lip or else it would have been considered a breach of discipline.

It's expensive but the Tatara Masamune is a terrific razor IMHO. It takes a Feather blade and delivers an incredibly close, comfortable shave. I have other razors I use and enjoy, Karve, Timeless, Pils, Rockwell 6S, Tradere etc, but if I HAD to go with just one, the masamune would be my pick.

I agree. Tatara Masamune gave a very close shave. I had experience with several Gillette razors, ATT, Timeless, Asylum, Blackland, Merkurs, Muhles. But I couldn’t compare anything with Tatara. In my opinion this is the best. Probably Wolfman Razors would be better. I have never tried. One thing comes close is the Personna DE vintage. I shaved with the light Aluminium handle and the shave was very close. Today I plan to shave with the Timeless handle and post my experience.

More pics. With the Timeless handle the razor looks like BBS-1

Like all things shaving, I enjoy having choices. Thus, I am not trying to find the one razor that works best for me. In fact, I sometimes shave different sides of my face with a different razor to see which works best that day. I might start out shaving with a straight razor and then finish up the shave with a DE razor. Or I might shave WTG using a very aggressive razor and then do my clean-up passes with a mild razor so I can do buffing strokes without irritation.

Today, I used the same Personna DE Blade (flipped the side) and the handle was Timeless. The shave was incredible and I think all other razors in my collection will not be in my rotation. I never thought the Personna razor can perform like this with the Timeless Plaid handle. If anyone has similar experience please let me know. Thanks
