I had to go to Japan for a couple of weeks at the end of May. Before I left, I flushed all of the pens that I had inked, with the exception of a couple that I was going to take with me. I put all of them away, except for my B&B Edison Herald Grande and my favorite Vacumatic. I forgot about them until the night before I left--they got flushed, then left nib down in a coffee cup on my desk at home with a paper towel folded up at the bottom. I asked one of my daughters to put them away for me in a day or so.
When I got back, I didn't think about them for a while. Then, sometime in June, I went looking for my Vacumatic. Couldn't find it. The Edison was missing too. I asked my daughter about it and she told me that she didn't put them anywhere--in fact, she completely forgot about me asking her to put them away. My wife and my older daughter didn't know anything about them either. I tried to ask the dog, but he seemed to have other things on his mind.
After that, I gave the house a full search a couple of times. I didn't exactly tear out the walls, but I looked everywhere that a pen might be hiding. Couldn't find a thing.
Fast forward to the beginning of this week. I've been on leave for a year so my office at work has been vacant during that time. There were a bunch of boxes scattered around on the floor, files to be organized and books to be put away. I spend a couple of days getting everything squared away, putting together my new desk chair and generally getting ready to work. On Wednesday, I sat down at my desk for the first time since the spring of 2012. On my desktop, I have a little pen box that I got for my birthday a couple of years ago. I keep a couple of Esties, a mechanical pencil and a refillable highlighter in it--just for emergencies. I modified it a little so that it has a pen tray that works like a false bottom--big enough to keep spare lead and some carts under it. Just to make sure everything was there, I checked the pens then lifted out the false bottom. Both of my missing pens were there, laying side-by-side.
Not sure how all this happened, but I'm glad that my pens are safe at home now. I guess I'll have to be careful not to offend Loki or whoever is responsible for this again!
