The Price of Witch Hazel in The US

Has anyone else noticed that, suddenly, store brand witch hazel is selling at godawful prices? I was in Washington DC when I first noticed it - CVS was selling it to the tune of some 4.99 for a 16oz bottle!
That's the same price as the Thayer's that was right next to it!:thumbdown

I finally found some for a slightly high price of 1.50 a bottle at Target. Coming back to CA, now I'm seeing the same price increases. What gives? :glare:Is the Hamamelis plant going extinct or something???

I think it's called greed. If the other manufacturer can get $10 for his product, why sell mine for $5? Especially since the store brand costs less to begin with due to less costly packaging, and little or no advertising support. That sort of pricing aggressiveness will appeal to the stockholders. Especially if the public continues to purchase. My SWMBO is ill at the moment so I did the grocery shopping for us this week. Following her instructions, I went to two different grocery stores. I purchased mayonnaise from one at $3.39 because that was on her list. I saw mayonnaise at the other while searching for salad dressing and noticed that the same brand and package was $5.49. I expect that next time the first store will have raised their price.

At Walgreens, Dickinson's WH is $4.99 each.

However, earlier this year I noticed all the Walgreens around me (and there are plenty) had them on sale for $1.99 each during a two week sale. After traveling around for a couple of days to the various stores I ended up with 15 bottles.

My wife uses WH as well, and I'm down to 12 or so bottles left and I figure its enough to last until they go on sale cheap again. I've seen them priced at $2.99, but have not seen the $1.99 sale on them since I bought them.

CVS prices are usually atrocious for a lot of their inventory unless it's on sale, i think they factor in a major convenience fee. The price i have seen in DC area is generally 1.20 to 1.80 a bottle of generic and ~3-4 for Dickinson's. And $10 for thayer's.

+1...I have also always foimd CVS to be over priced. I can usually get the generic at Target for under $2.

I bought the Target brand Witch Hazel and it was indeed inexpensive. They carry another brand but I recall it being perhaps 2x the price of the Target brand.

Count yourself lucky... In New Zealand, Thayers is US$25 plus postage because I can't find it in any shops :)

That is too expensive, man!

I'm from Portugal, and I can't get Thayers Witch Hazel here in Europe.
But I get Thayers from iherb.com. A bottle of Thayers costs about USD$7.60.

If you use code EMA957 you get $5 off, no minimum, first orders only. Postage cost very reasonable, about USD$4.00.

iHerb has many other interesting things and cheaply priced: Kiss My face, Weleda, Dessert Essence, Humphrey's, etc.

I have acquired several things from iherb and always had fast and great service, even for Europe!

I use Witch Hazel as an aftershave and Thayer's Alcohol-Free Toner as a followup. In Sacto WH is usually cheapest @ Wally's +-$2, Dickinson's +- $3-4, Thayer's AFT +- $10 (usually cheapest @ Raley's/Bel Air). I don't really care for high octane alcohol products on my face; tend to dry my skin but some scents are outstanding so one can compromise if they wish.

Ummmm...count yourself lucky if you can get it at all.

Here in Atlanta, I've looked in numerous CVS & Eckerd & Walgreens, plus Target and grocery stores, and they don't have witch hazel - or anything traditional. At least in the ones I've visited. Had to order online.

They also don't have any injector blades, and a few might carry store-brand DE's at inflated prices...but usually the prong holding those is empty. I'm guessing they are deciding not to restock. It wasn't quite like that a year ago.

It's all newer skin care products, plus cartridges...in many cases, only the latest, most profitable varieties. Welcome to the New World.

Not to wax excessively nostalgic, but I remember when you could buy raw chemicals useful in setting dyes, concocting home remedies etc. That's long gone. It's all brand-name products now. And I'm not that old!

GNC usually has it and I just got a message that if you buy 1, the 2nd is 1/2 off.
