The Postman Always Rings Twice...

Well, okay, hardly ever. But he did today .

I was surfing the web around mail time, hoping for one or more of several packages to be delivered today. A couple of them were really special.

Not to disappoint, he arrived as usual and was carrying goodies. I opened the boxes, hoping for the best. One was as I'd hoped, and condition was actually better tan I expected.

A few days ago (late Monday night) I was lucky enough to snag a 1918 Bulldog. These things are amazing, but I'll just post a pic and let it speak for itself.

I figured the other I was hoping for would get here tomorrow or Monday. Also purchased late Monday night, also shipped from Oregon, about 17 miles from where the Bulldog shipped from. Ironically these two razors have lived within 20 miles of each other for who knows how much of their lives, and on the same day I was lucky enough to buy both. And on the same day, they showed up here! (Mail man came back about an hour after the first delivery! Never done that before IIRC).

In the second package was a 1904-1906 Double Ring Gillette razor, in beautiful condition including the case and blade boxes. Why can't I date it specifically? Well, there's the only fly in the ointment. I can't get it to unscrew! I will consider methods long and hard before attacking it, I want to be sure to get it apart without damage. I figure it's been sitting like this in the box for many years, possibly as many as 80?. It was in a Bostonian outer box, and my pet theory is that the owner placed it there upon receiving a Bostonian as a gift, and there it remained for maybe 80 years.

I am a lucky, lucky man! :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

As far as getting the double ring abart, have you tried immersing the handle, but not the head, in very hot water? Hopefully, it will raise the temperature of the female thread more than the male thread which is on the head. This may let you unscrew the razor. I would suggest not letting the handle soak too long in the hot water or the temperature of the various parts would tend to equalize. No guarantee, but this might work and it can't do any harm to your beautiful antique razor.

Regards,
Tom

How are you going to get the Double Ring apart?

Still contemplating. Considering a soak in water to see if it might loosen anything (probably not, but at least it won't hurt!).

Next thought, penetrating oil. Up the bottom of the handle, I'm hopeful it could work it's way through the threads and do the job (most likely plan, highest probability of success I think). I took my Single Ring apart and compared, they seem to be set up exactly the same. It takes 5 turns to separate, but it gets a bit sloppy once it's started. If the Double is the same, the oil should work. I need to research whether it would attack silver plating first.

It must be corrosion, can't imagine what else it could be locking it up. Penetrating oil is made to work it's way through that. But like I said, more research is in order.

Yes, I've considered that. Changing temps, without going extreme may work. Thought of the refrigerator to the hot water too, as that would increase the temp. change without resorting to extremes like freezer or higher heat. But I am also concerned with splitting the handle tube, so I'm not sure. I want to research the oil some more. If it doesn't attack silver plate, I think that may be the first try (other than a simple soaking, which I don't have a lot of confidence in).

I'll keep y'all posted!

Awesome! Absolutely awesome! Can I ask where you found the double ring? Sounds like you are appropriately cautious in your approach to free up the jammed handle piece. I wonder if a jeweler could help? But then again, folks who deal with antique jewelry usually don't have to deal with moving parts.

Congrats!!

Thanks to all for the replies!

Every razor I've bought so far (except a '55 Tech from an antique shop and my Merkur from WCS) have come from eBay.

And yes, I've considered a jeweler (and still am). Also considered a musical instrument repair tech (they deal with plated brass on a regular basis). Found myself on a site about horn repair last night. But so far, I keep coming back to penetrating oil. Might pick up some Kroil later today, more research first.
