The politics of Pee-Wee Football

I am beyond mad right now! We have had, for nearly a month now, a young man who has played on my son's team. There are 3 children who play with us. One each on the B,C,& D teams. Here's the problem. They're playing out of they're area. 2 of the 3 boys have had waivers, but the 3rd, the oldest, couldn't get a waiver from his team. 8 other kids from that team have received theirs, but this team wouldn't let him go for whatever reason. Somehow he got around all that by getting a League board member, a lawyer if that matters, to help take care of it.
Today, with nearly no time left to sign up anywhere to play, the team decided to protest & file a grievance against our team for recruiting him. We're talking 10 year old kids here & we have the team to beat! We don't need to recruit & we know better anyhow! The father had to take his kids back to the original team to at least get the kids signed up to play, which really broke the poor man!
The board member that helped in the process to let him play with us today decided to vote against him playing with our team along with another making it 2 to 1. I don't understand the whole process of how he got around the waiver, but whatever the process, it was done in a legit manner.

Is it not fair that a kid play for the team he wants be with? What good is a player if he doesn't want play for you? What kind of man would break a kid's heart who only wants to play football?
If you're wondering why he's so intent on playing with us, its because we have a good program with great coaches. The other team has a coach that belittles, berates, & screams at the kids. Why he's still there, I don't know. Frankly, I don't care.
All I know is that I got to witness a family in tears walk away from something they love & from a group that, in a matter of a month, has grown to care very much for them to go back to a program they've come to despise. Something is very wrong with all this.

Sorry for the rant, but I needed to get it off my chest to a group of guys I feel would understand about stepping up & acting like a man! Good night all

I hope I don't upset you here but...

You last sentance made the most sense. The father of the child in question should be working with the team he is assigned to make the other coach knock it off. If he just pulls his kids off he leaves the same scenario for the rest of the kids. Growing up my parents never failed to be involved(even if they couldn't afford to). It was a lesson I learned and have used with my kids. The other unfortunate lesson is life isn't fair and we have to play by the rules. I understand your frustration but use the system to penalize the other coach... It only takes a couple involved parrents to turn his attitude around. Sorry!

Please don't take any offense, but waivers, votes, lawyers, protests, grievances, and 10 year old football just sounds wrong.

I think that if everybody just takes a deep breath and calms down, you should be able to work it all out. Once everybody cools down, hopefully clearer heads will prevail. Good luck!

How long have you been involved with Pop Warner? You have to understand that from the other teams' perspective it appears that your team might be packing its roster since you have 3 on waivers. Please note that I am not saying you are . . . it's just that it does have the appearance.

Anyway, good luck in sorting it all out.

If it was my kid, I'd tell him to suck it up and play for the team that he is supposed to play for. This isn't the NFL, you don't get to chose who your are going to play for.

It definitely appears suspect, but the father pretty much has to have all 3 kids play together. Its just too hard to be in 2 or 3 different places at once. This kid is a good player & would be a great asset to any team, but of all the teams, he would see the least playing time on our team.
I guess I don't understand why they would waiver 8 of 9 kids but wait until nearly the last minute on the last day to do all this to one kid. This could've been done in the first week.
The dilemma now is do we let him play tomorrow & risk a forfeit if we lose our appeal? My personal opinion is let him play every game & forfeit every game. I also think that the rest of the team has that sentiment as well. The kids know what this means when it comes playoff time. They know they may never get to the finals because of all this, but I feel that they don't care & just want him to play alongside them.

+1. My kid wouldn't be in any of this, honestly. I certainly wouldn't call this progress if this is the current state of youth sports.

It is certainly in a poor state as far as this case goes. I wouldn't want my son playing if we were in this situation or had the kinds of coaches that this other team has, but if he really wanted to play, I'd do my best, just like this father, to get him on a team that he wants to play for.

Sorry, I know you're under stress over this and I don't mean to add to it. I'm beginning to think that the world is getting too complex for me these days!

Not stressed so much as I'm disappointed. When you hear things like, "This is all for the kids" & "We need to keep their interests at heart", it makes you wonder what kind of people would act like that. Its pretty sad when kids act more like adults than adults do.

I can't beleive how complicated and political these things have become. When I played Little League, I think you were randomly assigned to teams. Even if you weren't with your friends, you got to know your team and it was OK.
