The Perfect Shave?

I'm wondering-has anyone here found a shaving technique, along with a combination of hard and soft gear that they're so satisfied with that they've stopped trying to improve upon it?

I'm guessing the answer is no-if they have, they probably wouldn't be here.

To me, the hope of perpetual improvement along with the variety of hard and soft goods, is a big part of what appeals to me about wetshaving. If I ever did find the perfect combination (for me), I fear the feeling would be like that of Alexander the Great weeping-for there were no more worlds to conquer.

I can pick a setup that is almost certain do deliver an outstanding shave if I do my part, but what that means might vary from one day to the next.

Some days I want an aggressive razor, others I'll go milder either to give my face a rest or just because I want to be able to shave with slightly less vigilance.

I've pretty much settled on one blade, but rotate through many soaps because it's fun, not because I'm trying to find a perfect combo. Same with brushes.

Shaving is like eating...that beard keeps growing and hunger keeps returning, and just because I made the perfect burger or had the perfect shave yesterday doesn't mean I'll be attempting to duplicate it exactly today.

Yeah I know what you mean, but I find that the perfect shave will change from day to day, depending on everything, skin condition, weather, sunny/cloudy, are you in a good mood or have you got the ****s about something!

Thats why I find it good to have a few options on the table, vary the routine to suit how you feel that morning.

What do you think?

I am close to the perfect shave!

Truefitt & hill pre shave oil
Rooney 2 super
AOS lavender cream
Gillette slim w feather blade

The missing link is an aftershave splash to match up with the scents. Perhaps scs.

The above combo, foe me, blows away all of my other products in my den and has cured my AD!

What makes a guy risk a fall and an olympic medal to do a quintuple-twisting triple back flip? If you've found perfection and stuck with it, you've given up trying and having fun.

when married you have sex with the same person , often drive the same car to and fro for years , live in the same home and have the same mates. I will be buggered if i cant at least change a shave routine heheh:thumbup1:

I am a plain type of guy on shaving

Some shave oil

Some cheap foam to see the lawn I have mowed so to speak
(dollar tree has some extra thick stuff I use/the sensitive skin type)

My shave balm

and my Muhle 89 for everyday use

the Parker 91 - for a super close shave when the urge hits me

Good shaves everytime

When I first started DE shaving 5 1/2 months ago, I had no technique, and experimented with different razors, blades and soaps every day or so. This created a situation of a lack of consistency. If I did something right for one set of "tools", it would often change for another. I finally found the razor that I like the best, then I retried all the different brands of blades (in that one razor) , and came up with ONE or TWO blades to stick with. I then settled on ONE or TWO different soaps with similar qualities and stuck with them. I then proceeded to work on my technique. I found that in the beginning I was too concerned with getting the coveted BBS that everyone of us strives for. That is not so important when you are starting out. First you should concentrate on finishing a shave in comfort and without nicking or cutting you face, the closeness will come naturally after you have developed your technique.

Now I RELAX & ENJOY when I shave, and I am not concerned about cutting my face up every time I load up a new blade. My shaves now are COMFORTABLE, CLOSE (BBS) and FUN! This worked for me, you might want to give it a try!

Same set up for 4 years, though ive only been a member here for 2. Lots of hot water, a Shavemac Retro (silvertip), Kiss My Face (all scents: Menthol, Lavendar, Patchouli, Peach, Vinilla and no scent) A Gillette Fatboy or Dovo Ebonholtz 6/8 hollow grind, and Booster Barber Shop Classics aftershave ( usually Oriental Spice or Bay Rum). Thats kept me very satisfied and still above the poverty level for quite some time.

I got close this morning.

Like some of the others, I have narrowed down my experimentation considerably.

for one thing, I am sticking with the Slim. Everyday.

I use a boar brush. Right now an Omega.

I have a few soaps and a couple of creams, and that's it.

Lately I have been trying to find the best BLADE. I think that by sticking with the same razor, same brush, and same few products, I will be able to more fairly evaluate what blades I like best. I would like to limit my blades to 1-3 brands. If I find one is clearly superior for me, I wouldn't hesistate to restrict it to one blade.

I have found what I consider to be a fairly perfect shave.

I use an EJ-89L with Shark blades.

Arko Cool Shaving Cream with my own handmade soap

Cold Water

A VDH Badger Brush

DKNY Be Delicious ASB

This is probably different than what most people use but it works great for me.

I find that I have been keeping my setup consistent until I find I can consistently produce a "perfect" shave. Then, once I have my baseline shave, I can begin experimenting. This morning, mere minutes before I logged on and read this thread, I had what for me is a perfect BBS shave with my setup:

Merkur HD w/ a Derby blade, Rooney 1/1, Bigelow (face-lathered), Thayer's Rose Petal WH, and Baxter of California AS.

I'll stick with this setup until all the product is gone. Then I'm heading out to try a bunch of stuff that I can compare to this shave I'm enjoying this morning.

I've got it down to 2 or 3 razors, 1 brush, 2 or 3 soaps, 2 aftershaves. Any of them will give great results, I just get bored using the same ones constantly.
