The Palmolive way

It’s something I learned from a very old Palmolive ad for their brushless and lathering creams.

First you clean your face with water and regular (bar) soap. Then you rinse your face with water. Plain and simple so far 😃.

After that, you do it again but this time you don’t rinse your face and just leave it wet and soapy.

The third step is to then rub in your brushless cream or go to town with your brush and lathering cream (or soap).

This leaves an amazingly slick surface and makes shaving a breeze.

This is one of the best pre-shave preps I’ve come across and just wanted to share it here.

Happy shaving!

I will try that this morning when shaving with my Revisor 6-0035 straight razor.

Some of us here have been doing the bar soap wash prior to lathering for decades.

I have been doing that also for years. The only thing is that I have always thoroughly rinsed my face before applying my lather. I apply my Palmolive shave cream to the brush, work it well into the brush with my fingers and then face lather.

This time, after the rinse, I will reapply the face soap (Pears transparent), leave it on and then face lather. Should be interesting and will report back here.

Sounds a lot like the prep I get from showering before my shave. Wash, rinse, get out of the shower, apply a bit more wet soap, then the cream or lather. The Way ... Yay!

Finished my SR shave with the additional application of face soap. There was possibly the slightest increase in slickness but not enough to warrant the extra effort/time. I will try again tomorrow by applying more face soap in the second application.

It could just be the face soap that I am using. I don't have any Palmolive face soap, only Pears transparent and Cussons Imperial Leather. If I don't get it tomorrow with the Pears, I'll try again with the Cussons.

Face wash and rinse is my standard pre-shave prep. Second part makes sense based on my experience blending different shaving soaps where I found that adding a small amount (10-15% by weight) of tallow-based bar soap (Ivory mostly) to the grated mix significantly enhances slickness. Suspect that the Palmolive recommendation was developed at a time when most bath soaps were tallow-based. May not work as well with other types of products that are not as slick.

My latest and best mix includes Williams (can substitute Arko since discontinued), Van Der Hagen Deluxe, some Arko, Dove Men+Care, Ivory and Prorasso Red. Detailed formula via the link below:

Anybody Else Mix Soaps? - https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/anybody-else-mix-soaps.638738/#post-12212883

Once I 3017 most of my current blend I'll substitute Mitchell's Wool Fat tallow bath soap for the Ivory. The MWF bath soap is fare slicker than Ivory, slickest of any soap of any type I've used.

That could very well be, I don’t know. I do know that it even works when I use cheap vegan/non-tallow bar soap from Lidl. It’s not a groundbreaking concept, but it does work.

When do you expect to receive your Torry? Looking forward to hearing your opinion.

That was a really great cream; wish it were still available.

his time, after the rinse, I will reapply the face soap (Pears transparent), leave it on and then face lather.
I have found that Pears (at least the blue that has mint extracts) makes a decent shaving soap on it's on.

@Lane101 Take a look at the Pears soap at Dollar Tree the next time you're there. I've used it a few times (as have others) and found it to be a decent shaving soap. I wonder what a 1:1 of Pears and Dove Men + Care would be like. Super simple and cheap.

Just out of curiosity, is Palmolive shave cream available in chain supermarkets in the US? In AU it is available in most IGA and some Coles and Woolworths.

Shaved (SR) again this morning the Palmolive way. This time I reapplied more Pears transparent bath soap than yesterday after my normal prep. The result was an actual loss of slickness compared to just face lathering with Palmolive cream.

It would appear that Pears transparent and Palmolive cream do not work well together. Tomorrow I will try it with Cussons Imperial Leather.

Could work if Pears provides lots of slickness to compliment Dove's superlathering ability.

Tried it this morning and it definitely added sickness to the shave cream.
But left my neck a little "over soaped" lol.
Kind of dried out, but I'm sure it must have been the type of soap I used.
Will try others.
Also got me thinking about how some others use Barbasol 1919 or Cremo like this before they put on shave cream to boost the slickness. Stephen Davidson does it in his videos.
I plan to try it as soon as I can even find my 1919.
