What's new

The New York Jets.

I wasnt gonna start a thread but screw it, I'm excited so here it is... Gang green all day!!!

Week 3

Darrelle Revis was taken out of the game on a non contact injury as he slipped while trying to tackle a ball carrier, hope it's not too serious.

LaRon Landry picked up the slack though, as he got a pick 6 for a TD.

I thought the game was over with Miami getting away with the W... then Marky Mark, I mean, Mark Sanchez threw a late TD (after spreading the ball to Miami's DBs for most of the day) so I thought the game was over with us getting the W... well, not so fast, Miami drove to field goal range FG'd the game into overtime.

Then in OT I thought Miami definitely had the game bagged with a FG (even though their kicker had missed a 47 yarder) but Rex Ryan iced him and it worked, Miami's K missed the 48 yard FG to win the game. I couldnt believe this... but then...

NOW PAY ATTENTION:

So the Jets get the ball back with good field position and drive down to put Nick Folk in good field goal range... Nick Folk comes up to kick and I'm thinking (again) "This game's bagged" and started celebrating and whatnot, well... the 33 yarder, a gimme for God's sake, was BLOCKED!!! So I'm like....

...but then... what is it? Miami's HC royally screwed this one up by calling a time out? What????

Have you ever seen a special teams unit block a field goal back to back? I dont recall one... maybe in college football.

Nick Folk made the gimme, Jets win!!!! Oh, and Dan Carpenter will probably be released next week and Joe Philbin is in the hot seat as a head coach early in his career.

Great way to start the week!!!

I never thought the Ravens would pull it out. :biggrin1: I made the mistake of hitting the sack when it looked like Brady could do no wrong.

You missed out!!! Flacco pulled a great 2 minute drill on the Pats. I thought they werent going to get the ball back because the refs called like 3 or 4 penalties on the Ravens extending the TOP and downs of the Pats, I was getting heated but they finally sacked brady cleanly on a 2nd down and then hurried him for an incompletion on the 3rd down. Once Flacco got the ball, he ripped them apart. Oh, and Ray Rice, that kid's a beast AND he's clutch to say the least.

BTW There were 24 penalty flags thrown in that game and 14 went against the Ravens for 134 yard iirc. These replacement refs are crazy, lol.

Ugly win for Gang Green.

I'll take it.

Agreed! A W is a W.

Darrelle Revis is out for the season though.

Saw an article on ESPN.com today about how the Jets aren't ruling out Revis for the Super Bowl. I'd like to rent a room in Rex Ryan's head for a day just to see what's going on up there. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of space if anyone wants to join me.

Lol... it's been blown out of proportion by the media again, Rex said that if there's a slight chance that Revis is healthy enough to play and the Jets are fortunate enough to get to the big game, why put him on IR now.

After dealing with the likes of Peter Carroll, Al Groh and Eric Mangini, at least we're fortunate to have a confident coach who wants to be there and wants to win; he's not too soft and/or undecisive (Herm Edwards -love him as a person though-) and he's not trying to be a clone of his mentor and pretend to be a misterious hard *** (Mangini,) so I'm pretty happy with him and so are many other Jets' fans... I think you could relate, how many good coaches have you guys had in between Joe Gibbs' retirements?

EDIT: Not making excuses for him as I think he should've known that the mere words of "super bowl" coming out of this mouth was going to be a big hoopla, so maybe he slid it in there because he's a clown after all.

It's hard to say how many good coaches we've had since Gibbs, because the biggest problem with the Redskins has been the owner and GM, until recently. Success starts at the top and... trickles down. The best franchises are run by savvy owners - Steelers (Rooneys), Giants (Maras), Patriots (Kraft), Colts (Irsay), etc. Dan Snyder is far outside of that pantheon.

I think Rex is a good coordinator and good at inspiring his players, but, intellectually, I don't think he has what it takes. I think he's stupid. Literally. The things he says and does are stupid. I'm not saying that to be mean. I just, honestly, I think he's a stupid guy. Nice guy, fun guy, knows football, but stupid. Being a head coach means a much higher level of responsibility than being a coordinator. The head coach has to make acquisition decisions and micromanage personalities. It requires intellect, which I don't think Rex Ryan has.

Here are two things:

1. The New York Jets' best receiver is a 5'10 (short by NFL standards) hot head who has serious emotional problems. Who is the second best receiver? I honestly don't know. They really don't have one other receiver who is noteworthy. They let Burress go (for whatever reason). Instead of bringing in another receiver for Sanchez to throw the ball to, they bring in another quarterback. The big off season acquisition is a quarterback. Quarterback is not Small Forward. You don't swap quarterbacks like, "Oh hey, Lebron needs a rest, let's bring in Shane Battier." But the big thing is, they didn't bring in a veteran receiver to give the chance a team to "win now," which is what the team is built to do.

2. They hired Tony Sparano to coach the offense. Sparano stunk in Miami. Miami's offense was BAD.

2b. Rex Ryan said they brought in Sparano to return to the "ground and pound." This is not a "ground and pound" league anymore. The two best teams in the league last year (Giants and Patriots) had two of the worst rushing attacks in football. The previous Super Bowl champ had a mediocre (at best) running game. The Saints won the Super Bowl without a run game. The Colts won without a run game. And so on and so forth. What all of these teams did have was an elite quarterback with good receivers (Manning, Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Harrison, Wayne, Nicks, Cruz, Jennings, Driver, Welker, Gronk, Hernandez, etc.) This is a passing league now, so why would you think it's a good idea to return to the "ground and pound?" Ask the Jaguars how that's working out. I'm not saying a good running game isn't beneficial, but it's not enough by itself. Conversely, a good passing attack is essential and not an option.

2c. Shonn Greene isn't an elite running back, anyway. He's not MJD, Ray Rice, Frank Gore, LeSean McCoy, etc. He's averaging 2.8 yards a carry. Really bad.

This is to say nothing of all the weird, goofy stuff that Rex has done, such as his crushes on Brady and Peyton Manning; his dopey comments about the Jets owning NY, as opposed to the Giants; the SB predictions; etc. It's like he wants to be a celebrity or something. He has to be in the spotlight and he just can't help himself.

Like I said, I'm not trying to be mean, but, I just don't see it happening with Rex. I just don't think he has what it takes. The best coaches are, if not "intellectuals," cerebral. That goes for all sports: Auerbach, Phil Jackson, Vince Lombardi, Belichick, LaRussa, Torre, Coughlin, etc. These are all thoughtful guys who not only inspire the teams that they coach or coached, but are excellent managers and problem solvers. I think Rex is good at the former and very bad at the latter. If he proves me wrong and wins a Super Bowl, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.

Your "talking sense" and ""making valid points" gives me no recourse! Sometimes being a Jets fan requires a whole lot of faith. Lowered expectations help too.

Looking forward to this Sunday when my Niners go into NJ to take on gang green.
The niners need to come out strong after that weak showing against the vikings.
It should be interesting b/c the teams are somewhat similar - based on tough D, run game and efficient passing - though the efficiency part of the passing game is erratic for both teams.

I have a feeling that Tebow is going to get more plays this week then he has in the previous weeks.

As a Redskins' fan, I sympathize. I mean, we've won a title since '69, but it has been a LONG TIME.

It seems like it's been forever for the 49ers as well - since the '94 season. But I guess it really isn't that bad - I've seen them win 5 super bowls in my football watching career.
My in laws are from Philly and they have never won an SB and I'm sure to remind them of that whenever they think they have a good team.

I would be STUNNED if the Jets beat the 'Niners. Particularly since the 49'ers were upset last week and will be looking for revenge.

The thing I forgot to mention is this:

3. I think they totally screwed themselves with Mark Sanchez.

Usually, the quarterback's fourth year is the year to really assess whether or not he's going to be a franchise quarterback. A lot of people forget that Drew Brees was pretty sloppy in his first three years as QB of the Chargers. It wasn't until his fourth year that he blossomed into an elite passer. Eli won the Super Bowl in his fourth year.

Well, this is Sanchez' fourth year as quarterback of the Jets. But instead of equipping him with as many tools as possible to judge his progress, they LOST talent at wide receiver AND undermined the guy's self confidence by acquiring the most divisive, polarizing player in NFL history. Oh, and they brought in an offensive coordinator who's run first and pretty much killed Chad Henne in Miami. Great!

Disagree, neither you nor I know Rex Ryan personally. We judge him as a clown by his antics; that's hardly a fair asessment of someone's intellectual capabilities. He has a team of scouts and evaluators at his disposal that help him make decisions, and judging by the way he does business, he listens to other people's inputs a lot.

A couple of years ago when Revis was holding out, Rex personally went to meet with family members of Revis and Revis himself and got him to agree to terms with the team, that seems like a good micromanaging of a personality to me. He's a people person. That helps a lot when you try to manipulate/micromanage/encourage people.

Here are two things:

On the surface, yes, those seem like stupid moves. I'm not an expert by any means but yes, when they let go of Burres and even Braylon Edwards, I was left scratching my head. When we drafted some kid out of NC in the first round, all I was thinking was "That's a basketball school" but if you think about it, there could be a million reasons behind these moves.

Braylon Edwards and Burress bring in too much (legal) baggage, and Burress is 35 years old.

Maybe they want to evaluate Sanchez' raw skills this year to make a decision to trade him or not.

Maybe Sanchez didnt feel comfortable with Burress at the end of the day.

Like I said, I'm not an expert and obviously I'm not an insider either but there may be reasons not immediately apparent to football fans.

I personally hate Tim Tebow since Florida, but did you see him play in Denver last year? Who wouldnt want that, plus the jersey sales at a bargain price? Besides, we have that McElroy kid from Alabama who just might even be better than Sanchez in the future, I'm sure he'll at least make a good manager on the field while Tebow runs a wildcat.

2. They hired Tony Sparano to coach the offense. Sparano stunk in Miami. Miami's offense was BAD.

Agreed to an extent. This goes back to your way of thinking, maybe he wouldnt make a good HC but he could be a good coordinator.

Ask the Jaguars how that's working out. I'm not saying a good running game isn't beneficial, but it's not enough by itself. Conversely, a good passing attack is essential and not an option.

Again, you countered your own argument. The Jets know they dont have an elite QB... so what's the best thing after that? An average QB along with a good running game, or at least a team that tries to run the ball in order for the defense to be on its toes for play action. Do you want the Jets sorry aerial attack on 85% of the plays a la Brady and Manning? With Marky Mark we wouldnt win a single game and even though this isnt a running league anymore a good running game keeps the TOP for the other team down. It also gives our bread and butter (defense) breathing time.

2c. Shonn Greene isn't an elite running back, anyway. He's not MJD, Ray Rice, Frank Gore, LeSean McCoy, etc. He's averaging 2.8 yards a carry. Really bad.

Agreed. But again, at least trying to run the ball keeps defenses honest.

This is to say nothing of all the weird, goofy stuff that Rex has done, such as his crushes on Brady and Peyton Manning; his dopey comments about the Jets owning NY, as opposed to the Giants; the SB predictions; etc. It's like he wants to be a celebrity or something. I know you didnt say Phil Jackson, but anyways... all those guys you mentioned had the likes of Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, Pippen, Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Pujols, Jeter, etc. Those guys were put in positions to win right away with some of the greatest athletes ever!!! Rex Ryan wasnt given this, he was given an overrated QB from USC's system that masks their shortcomings... Matt Berkely will probably go in the first round next year, but anyways, Rex Ryan took the Jets to two AFC championship games!! With virtually no offense!!! Not too many coaches can say they've been to their conference championship game. Look at Gary Kubiak in Houston, that guy is sorry as a HC, all that talent is wasted year in and out, I wish we had Matt Schaub in a green jersey and/or Andre Johnson.

Did you know Bill Bellichick was the HC of the Browns? Look up his win % with them. Out of nowhere he gets Tom Brady and he's a genius?

I read an article on SI a long time ago where the main point was that visiting teams from opposing coasts usually have a very low winning percentage. :biggrin1:

Maybe jet lag or something...

Alabama vs Tennessee 2009. Two field goals blocked by the same player, Terrence Cody. They were back to back if I remember correctly.

Yes, this is definitely the truth. And I think it is even more exaggerated when west coast teams travel east as the body clocks of the team from the west are at 10am for a 1pm kick-off.
That being said, the Niners went 5-0 last year in 10am PT/1pm EST starts.

If Rex Ryan can shut his mouth for a few games perhaps his team will have a better chance? "We hope to get Revis back in time for the Super Bowl"

HAHAHAhahahahahahaha...lettuce be serious
